I have been driving for many years.  I think I should have noticed the little secret on my dashboard that was staring me in the face the whole time.  I didn't...and I bet you didn't either.
 
 Have you ever borrowed a car and when arriving at the petrol station wondered...mmm, which side is the petrol filler cap?
 My normal solution was to stick my head out the window, strain my neck and look, try to see in the side mirrors or even get out of the car!

If you look at your fuel gauge it will tell you which side the fuel filler is.

On my i30 I have small icon of a petrol pump with an arrowe pointing to the left. Guess what, my fuel filler is on the left.

On other marques the handle of the petrol pump will indicate which side the fuel filler is.
If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left.  If your tank is on the right, the handle will be on the right (see photo).  

 WHY don't the dealers share such information with car buyers?
 
 Why isn't  this in the Highway Code or even the car 's manual??
 
 I don't know why any mechanic I have ever been to has  never thought of mentioning this to me??
 
 The only explanation can be that all these people don't know it either !
 
 So I thought I'd share the world's best kept car secret with you.

All my cars since 1990 have had an indicator showing the filling point (Fiat Tipo, Jaguar XJ6, Ford Mondeo, Renault Megane, MGZR)

Knew about that eye, but i have never owned a right side fill up car.
you know why most have fill up left side?

GMH in Australia try to tell us its Australia's own Car  a lot don't relise this but my GranDaddy told me, he could not even drive a Car he was a horse and cart man, reconed his horses could beat cars up hills easy,
Also at one time, we had a very Honest System ( slow but straight!! ) they would pump your fuel into a glass overhead measuring container, you could look up and see the colour and see there is no water or dirt, and you could see just exactly how much fuel, then you put the filler into your tank pull the trigger and the fuel would gravity feed in. now here in Australia we don't even know how much tax we are paying let along how much fuel we really get for the one Liter price.
but thats how it works.

First time that point has been illustrated.. Fairly certain it got a brief mention in "things I've noticed about my i30" because I have been driving for around 33 years and didn't notice it either until someone pointed it out...

My understanding for the fuel filler cap being on the passenger side is one of safety.
In the event that you run out of fuel out on the road and have to use a jerry can to top her up, you are not on the traffic side of the car. I guess in the US and parts of the UK, it would be the opposite.

It's on the drivers side on the Tiida... less likely to get my fuels mixed up with them being on opposite sides (I can be a little vague at times   )

I remember pumps, even in good old blighty, having a glass see thro' but the fuel went straight into your tank.

I remember there being little colourd balls in a clear glass on the side of the
pump that moved around when the fuel was pumping.

Checked the i30 and even though it fills up on the left the image on the fuel guage has the pump on the right - though there is an arrow pointing to the left.
