He didn't have much hope when his helmet came off did he.
It reminds me of that crash Wayne Gardner had not long after he went to Europe and before he made it to the top.
I imagine Rusty will remember it. We saw the footage but at the time no one knew who Wayne Gardner was, nor that he was Australian (unless, I guess, you were a fan of the sport).

It's here.

Ironically, his bushy hair might have been his undoing ... I assume his Helmet would have maybe not been as snug as on a rider with short hair  :undecided:

I had never heard of the lad, not into motor sports, but I am sorry that he came to this end.  As has been mentioned, once is crash hat came off it was game over really...

I s'pose his loved ones could seek comfort in that he probably died doing the thing he loved...  <sigh>

Yep, I remember it well...... :)

Wayne Gardner thought he'd killed him and seriously thought about pulling the pin on his racing after it.

That thought crossed my mind too, Daz...but the video clearly shows the chin strap flapping as the helmet tumbles across the infield.
One would have to assume the impact was such that it's torn the mounting point from the helmet.
