Another reason I like cruise control.

What a wonderful revenue raiser for the govt. I doubt the deterrent effect will reduce the road toll at all. Very efficient though, cops don't even have to stop and write a ticket.  :disapp:

They can't even keep up with the speed cameras they've got, sending fines out -they'll have no hope now  :)

But the very latest technology is in Britain.
They are testing  hi res cameras which not only record your speed but can take photos clear enough to tell if you have your seat belt on or are using your phone - up to half a klm away.  And it sends the fines out electronically.

You could lose your licence with one photo. :whistler:

I believe there was a study in Melbourne that found that the most effective means of getting people to slow down was a visible police presence.  More people slowed down for the police car than slowed down for speed cameras.  Then again, statistics can be manipulated to "prove" anything.   :p

I'd tend to agree. A good, visible police presence on the roads deters people from breaking the law. Police motorbikes are particularly effective.
Unmarked cars are also necessary to catch recidivist offenders and those who just flout the law.
Having said that though, the new speed cameras they're putting on all the major intersections have certainly changed my driving behaviour - I always check I'm within the limit prior to entering intersections now on major arterial roads.

French have had them for years.  Cameras mounted through a hole in the boot of unmarked cars.  Cameras mounted in Armco barrier rail.
Cameras in wheelie bins.

My local council has cars with telescopic cameras on the roof that record parking and obstruction offences whilst driving along a street and tickets are issued by post.  Not just parking on yellow lines and ped crossings but also  parking across dropped kerbs  intended for wheelchairs, pushchairs and prams.

Dorset Police Testing New Speed Camera
A new £12,500 mobile speed camera, the 'Concept II' is being tested by Dorset Police. The camera is claimed to be so accurate it can identify drivers over half a mile away. A combined laser speed measuring device and ultra high definition digital video camera can capture 4,000 separate offences and will be used for offences including failing to wear a seat belt, using a mobile phone, picking your nose, putting on make-up, reading, eating with a knife and fork, smoking dope, drinking - as well as speeding.

One of my friends was sent a fine in the mail, stating that he had been caught speeding.  He didn't believe it and asked to see the photo.  They sent him a copy of the photo, which showed him, driving his Porsche 911 (an older one), talking on a mobile phone, and not wearing a seat belt.  He paid the fine without taking it to court.

That friend is the one with the rash.  This friend is the one with the 911 (I wish I had one of those next to my i30 in the garage).
