I'm in the early stages of thinking about buying a Land Rover Defender station wagon.
There are lots of different models with different engines, depending on the year, including the 200 tdi & 300 tdi engines, TD5 and the later Ford Puma engines of 2.4 & 2.2 litre capacity.
I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge or experience of the different models and any recommendations.
I have heard that the TD5 once it has lived its life is basically a throw away replacement job, for example, and complicated by its electronics.
But on the other hand, I've heard that it is much more refined than earlier engines.
Any input is appreciated.
I'm a bit of a British car tragic I'm afraid, hence my love of Jaguars & Land Rovers, Austin 1800s, etc.

I was seriously looking at a Discovery late last year as a replacement for our Jackaroo.  The one I had my brain (not heart) set on was a 2003 with the TD5.  I have heard that the electrics aren't that good, but the engines were solid.

I was advised to stay away from the Defenders due to their aged design, and lack of safety features.  However, I do like them, and if I didn't have little FatKids, then it would probably have been a Defender.

I've looked at Discos too in the past, but I don't want another family car. Just something to do some work, toddle around town, pull trailers, etc and enjoy doing up and customising a bit. Plus the Defenders have character.

Really, I would have thought fire & theft were the real risks, considering your location, so the insurers would still get at you.  :fum:
