Can take up to 14 years before diesel cars save the average driver money
Fuel can be almost 6p a litre more expensive than unleaded petrol

But I'm above average  :D  ;)
PLUS, going diesel isn't all about saving money. It's also about the experience, the enjoyment, the character, the.....etc.  :)

I did a calculation for my case.
- 50.000 km/year
- petrol price: 1.43 EUR/L
- diesel price: 1.32 EUR/L

Based on sprittmonitor.de:
- petrol economy: 7.5 L/100km
- diesel economy: 5.8 L/100km

The result: the diesel fuel costs me ~1500 EUR/year less. Subtract the additional cost of changing 5.5L of high-grade engine oil and I'm still way over 1000 EUR/year. The difference between petrol (126 HP) and diesel (115 HP) in price was ~1000 EUR (my 90 HP model was even a lot less than that :))...

I'm so happy with the diesel engine, last week I was driving in the city enjoying it so much, I forgot the turnoff to go home. I drove my 3.8lt petrol auto yesterday with a trailer (light load), what a performance, gear changing all the time on hillls, no guts. The diesel experience is so good, I don't give a stuff about the money anymore, BTW Diesel is STILL 20c / L dearer than petrol too.

In Australia petrol can be up to 20 cents a litre cheaper than diesel, but in recent times petrol prices have risen, and at some times, was about the same at $1.48c/litre.

Currently, diesel where I live is $1.48, petrol is $1.36. It's cheaper towards Melbourne (capital of Victoria, south eastern state).

In any case, I fill up once a month, perhaps. Costs me about $60 each time.

And bugger the so-called savings. I enjoy driving this particular diesel.

For me, purchasing a diesel is not about saving money. It's because I like the behaviour of the engine better. It's just more comfortable.

When I bought my diesel in 2009, diesel was cheaper than petrol but it didn't last long.
For most of the time diesel has been about 20c dearer but right at the moment in Perth, they're about the same price, give or take a cent or two.

I don't miss lining up for petrol every cheap Tuesday. Now I go every 12 days and there is little fluctuation in the price.

I also love not having to put my indicator on as soon as the low fuel light goes on to drive into the service station.

And then there's the Torque.

Having owned both I will say that the diesel is better to drive and more responsive.
