Yesterday in a Melbourne car park as I was walking back to my car, I pushed the remote button to unlock the car and another i30 nearby also unlocked. What the!!

Does this happen often and can I be sure someone else can't open my car ?

Any ideas

Thanks All

Rachel

Hi Rachel and welcome,

Never heard of it before, and we have 3000 members in over 60 countries. I guess there are only a finite number of codes and the same thing could happen with any car/brand.

We have had 2 i30's on and off for nearly 4 years and neither my wife or I have had that happen...

If that other person with the same code as you happened to accidentally unlock your car it would relock in 30 seconds so your valuables wouldn't be at risk for long  :undecided:

I rememebr being in Asda carpark one time when i had a Seat Ibiza and it also unlocked a Vauxhall Vectra next to it! As Dazz says I guess there are only so many codes to go round but it hasn't happened since.

Hi Rachel...

that is a little worrying, but to ease your mind let me tell you that so long as no-one opens a door/boot/trunk the car will self lock again after thirty seconds.

It must be a million to one chance for that to happen, perhaps that's the day to buy a lotto ticket   :happydance:

It wasn't one of those reality shows were they play tricks on unsuspecting members of the public.

I wonder whether you can get your code changed.

May be worth asking just in case it happens to you.

Something similar have happened before.

I remember this issue was brought up in the news here in DK some 5 years ago I think. Can't remember if it was a specific brand or just random, and sorry to say, can't remember the outcome.

While not directly related to this post the following Snopes article
gives an explanation of how the modern remote keyless entry
system works. (Read on below the initial emails to find it).

PS. Welcome Rachel. How's the weather in Bendigo these days?
Will be visiting there in 2 weeks time.

R2, did you try to repeat it? I mean did you try closing 'both' cars and then reopening them? It might just have been a coincidence.

I new I had read this on here, im not mad!!! I was in Hampstead yesterday I stopped to nip into McD's for a take out coffee and parked behind a 60plate Santa Fe I pressed my fob to lock my car and the Santa Fe lights indicator lights flashed, I thought maybe someone was coming back so took know notice really, so when I came out and pressed the fob the lights flashed again weird so I pushed my fob to lock my car and the Santa Fe lights flashed again  :scared:

Did you try the doors to see if they opened.

Should of waited to see if the SF drivers fob locked/unlocks your car....
