Hi all,

My name is Ben - just recently traded my hard-earned cash with a 2009 Hyundai i30 SLX CRDi. I am a n00b in term of self-servicing my car, but would like to learn! For start, can anyone in Melbourne suggested a service centre other than an authorised Hyundai service centre? I live in Eastern Suburbs - so would prefer something close.

Cheers!

thanks mate.. :-) happy to see another Victorian too! :-)

Do you have suggestion of a servicing place? my 45,000KM service is due soon, and I got quoted $380.00 from an authorised Hyundai Service Centre. Looking for another cheaper option...

thanks again for the welcome! what a humid day today!!!

Can't suggest any servicing centres as I get mine done at the local Hyundai dealer.

One way you can save dollars though is to supply your own filters and oil. Filters can be purchased quite a bit cheaper online and as for oil, buy it from places such as Supercheap Auto when they have a sale on.

From memory my $45,000k service cost me under $200 as I supplied the oil, filters and radiator coolant.....

Re the weather, yes, it is humid, and it wasn't much better overnight!  :Pout:

Welcome kimmie,

Can't help re servicing, except to make sure you protect your warranty by using a qualified service centre and recognised brand parts. I get our cars serviced at the Hy dealer but supply filters & oil, save about 50% on costs.

Thanks Phil.. I just realised from your reply and Rusty's - that we can actually bring our own parts and have them installed them for us. So we basically just pay for the labour cost?

If that's the case, I can actually do the same with my regular mechanic and have him stamped on the logbook. Will that be OK for warranty purposes? It's hard for me to swallow that I'd have to pay a premium price for the same service - just for the sake of having a 'Hyundai logo' on the stamp.

My understanding is that alternative servicing would be recognised by Hy if it is a company like those franchise operations that are out there. I don't know how you would go if the stamp said "XYZ Autos" or a person's name because you introduce the possibility of Hy asking the mechanic to prove his qualifications etc. They could try to weedle their way out of a claim.

Yes it is expensive having Hy service the car, but so far this has been our experience.

(1) My daughter's car was serviced @ 60000 k's The service centre advised me, that they noticed a small oil leak in the engine / trans coupling. (I hadn't even noticed it). Booked it in following week, engine removed & refitted, cost $0.00. That's the sort of protection you get from using dealer servicing.

(2) Wife's car services @ 30000/ Asked for replacement of LED centre brake light due to water retention. Replaced, no questions asked. This part in the UK is a £150.00 item.

To be fair, if a private mechanic identified these faults you would have the same result if you advised Hyundai and requested they be corrected under warranty.

In Australia, any qualified mechanic can perform servicing, so long as they do it to the log book standard. You can also use non Hyundai parts, so long as they perform to Hyundai Specs. There is plenty on the ACCC website about this. The only way Hyundai can void your warranty would be if the parts failed, or the mechanic did not service properly, in which case you would have a claim against them anyway.

Wow i'm so jealous you have managed to find a good i30 cw CRDi SLX, that is exactly what I am after and it's a struggle to find the one I want.

I hope you're enjoying your new car!

I've checked quite a few of the Government Fleet Auctions, but all seems to be Automatics.

I'm completely sold on an i30cw SX 1.6 CRDi Manual in Grey. - Yes specific I know! haha

There was a perfect one in Canberra, but by the time I got back to the guy the car had sold! These manual i30's get snapped up in less than 24 hours!

Like I said in the beginning, I'm not in a rush for one so when the right one comes up, ill have my cash ready to buy the baby!

That's probably the best way to be - know what you want and be patient.
And if I might add, flexible as to its location.

Thought I saw one down at Peter Steven's Motorworld in Ballarat when I was down there a few weeks back but turns out I was mistaken, it was an auto...doh! :(

I was the same with mine. It had to be (what my footnote says) and I waited over a year for the cruise control to come standard fit before I committed. Stick with the plan.  :goodjob:

Today I headed down to Geelong and test drive a Manual i30. I have to say I was a little disappointed with the sloppy shifts of the transmission. It wasnt smooth at all. I have an 05 Elantra in manual and it glides through the gears effortlessly.

I'm now back to square 1. I'm wondering if I should go with the auto SLX. I'm thinking if I can get a hold of a 2010 or later model still with a warranty then I dont have anything to lose. Hyundai has put this transmission in millions of cars, they cant possibly be that bad?

Hi there,

I have now put close to 50,000KM on my i30. I am really surprised to hear your experience that the transmission is not smooth. Mine is perfect. It won't be an exaggeration to say that it brings smile on my face every time I drive with, be it a short trip around my house, or my daily commuter ride.

Fuel consumption is remarkable! I got very close to 1,000KM (985KM to be exact) on every full tank of Diesel... On average I got 4.8/100 or the worse is 5.1/100 if I did many short trips on the weekends.

I love people expression (drop of jaw) whenever I told them how efficient this car is. In fact, after listening to my testimony, two people from my workplace bought a CRDi i30 for themselves, and are very happy with their i30 too.

Trully awesome car. I never regretted my decision to buy this baby.

My last tank was (slightly) less than 1,000 kms.  :(
But all the others have been over 1,000 kms.  :D
My fuel economy has ranged from high 4's to mid 5's.
I feel that the gear change is now starting to improve too having just clicked over 10,000 kms.
