Hi,

I'm due for a 30k service on my petrol Hyundai.  My Hyndai dealership has quoted me $332.  Wanting to know what parts/consumables I can buy and supply myself to make that cheaper.  How do I know exactly what parts etc I need to get and where is the best place to source them? (I am in Brisbane, Australia).  Really appreciate your help.

I considered going to an independent mechanic but as a female I'm never really confident of what I'm being told.  Figured it might be best to stick with Hyundai but lower the costs if I can.  Anyone had any luck doing this in Australia?

Thanks for any help/guidance you can give.

G'day Zef,

Where in Brisbane are you?

Ask your friendly Hyundai dealer to itemise the costs for you, it should help you to see where you could save a few bucks,

but generally the oil and filters provide some savings.

But you can't get past their stupidly high labour costs.

Hi beerman,

Thanks for your reply.  I live in inner Brisbane and have in the past gone to Metro Hyndai at Windsor.  I have had an awful time getting them to answer their service line this past week.  At one point was promised a return phone call which never happened.  Got on to someone eventually and when I asked them how much the service would be if I supplied oil and filters he literally um'd and ah'd for 20 seconds before the call got cut off.  It was quite comical actually, he tried to form a reply of some sort about 4 different ways, just the first couple of words, then stopped, um'd and ah'd and would try to rephrase.  He was clearly struggling to answer then the call cut out and as I was pressed for time I wasn't able to call back.

I guess I'll try ringing again next week and also a couple of the other dealers.  I can be a little flexible about who I take it to as long as I can get public transport to/from them into the city for work.

That's fairly average....I got my Wife's I30 from there. Service was poor, so I would expect their servicing to be poor too.

I have a free 15000k service there, then it will be serviced by my guy.

In reality, there is nothing special about the 30k service on the petrol (on the diesel it is a diesel filter) so it shouldn't cost much.

If you asked around you could no doubt find a good mechanic who would charge half of what Hyundai ask and save you stuffing around providing your own stuff. Unfortunately the inner city is a bit out of my stomping ground so I can't point you in the direction of a good one. Perhaps the RACQ may be able to recommend one?

I'll ring around a bit on Monday and I'm now leaning towards a local mechanic I think.  I guess my main issue now is knowing what oil I should buy and what parts to buy and from where (if indeed it's worth it if I go to a local mechanic).  Any ideas?  I want to make sure if I go that route that I buy the correct stuff.

Get your dealer to supply the cost of filters and oil and the total cost of the service.

Then check hyspares.com for the parts and compare.

There are other suppliers of course & eBay, so you need to order in advance and have the materials ready when servicing date arrives. Be careful to get the correct oil at a good price.

After you have the goods, contact the dealer and ask for the price of the service with you supplying all the materials, then you can check, they're not ripping you off (excessively).  :(

I'm not aware what car you're driving, Diesel, Petrol etc.

G'day again.

Looking at the 2010 (and 2012) 2.0l  service schedule, it would appear that the 30000 is oil change, air filter, brake fluid and Coolant.

Nothing overly special there.

The brake fluid and coolant are age or km dependant, so you may have had them done last time if your slow racking up the kms

Thanks for the replies.  I mentioned in the first post, it's a petrol i30.  I have been slow getting the km's up, so much so that I'm probably due for the 45k service based on time.  I usually keep my service receipts so I'll see if I can dig it up and see what was done last time.  At any rate, I'll ring Hyundai again on Monday and find out what they have on their records as well.

Good luck :)

The reason I ask is there is a 1.6 and a 2.0l petrol. The year of your vehicle would give you an idea as to what is required. Ie the 30,000 service is 30,000 or 24 months. the 45k is 45 or 36 months etc.

Found a genuine air filter for $29.95 delivered on ebay...

If you don't want genuine you can get one for $19.95 delivered.

Try Lada & Korean Auto Parts - Direct Importers Lipscombe Rd, Deception Bay. All genuine parts, got everything for my old Excel there, and is cheaper than dealerships.

Ah, sorry.  It's a 2.0 petrol, 2009 manual.  Thanks for the parts links everyone.  It's giving me a few options now.

Haven't seen a Lada now for many years but reckon that any of them left out there most certainly WOULD require parts!

How much oil do I need and what type should I buy for a 2l petrol manual?

Also, timewise my car is really due a 48mth schedule, so I'm looking at spark plugs, coolant, brake and clutch fluid as well.  Any advice on what to look for in these is greatly appreciated. For instance, their are heaps of different spark plug types.  What would recommend?  How much coolant (and any specific brand)?  Same goes for the brake and clutch fluid.  How much do I need of it?  Is there anything I should look for specifically if buying myself?

Thanks for your help.

all of them appear to have been shipped back to Russia  :D.

In order to save money while passing annual service one may:
- buy and install cabin and air filters him/herself (this is the easiest task one may carry out without special tool)
- purchase oil, oil filter, igniter plugs etc somewhere and bring them all to a dealer

(I'm going for the first 15000km service tomorrow; did change the filters in advance a week ago)
