Hello All,

First post. I booked my I30 2008 CRD for 75k service. After an hour of parking my car into the garage, I checked the engine oil dip stick and noticed that the engine oil is black. I wiped the dip stick put it back in and pull it out and the engine oil on the dip stick is still black. Did it couple of times, black engine oil on the dip stick.

From the dealer to my place is maybe 20 km, will that cause the engine oil to go black in that amount of period? or is the engine oil use black in the first place??

Welcome to the forum.
It doesn't take long for diesel engine oil to go black, especially when mixed with the remnants of what was in there before.
I can't say I've checked mine after 20 kms but someone will be able to give you a definitive answer.

It's normal. I've looked at mine after a few minutes idle after changing the oil. Black or very brown anyway.

Diesels fill the oil with soot via the EGR and normal blow-by and unless you do something like a complete flush there will always be sufficient left behind to colour up the next lot.

...and apparently the discolouration doesn't effect the performance of the oil.

all depends on what your calling black,at each service 7,500 K's whether I do it or the dealer(I get the dealer to do the compulsory services to keep warranty)I check the oil colour before changing and after,before changing even though still having a good voscosity,it is black and non transparent,after changing,and having started the car,checking there are not oil leaks it is then a cleaner brown looking colour and very transparent,even after a few days it is still a brownish colour and transparent,certainly not black,but hey this is wht I have observed,I would be suspicious if I had it serviced and checked the oil a short time later and it was black and non transprent

Yes the oil will always go black very quickly, as already stated, the soot from the exhaust is recirculated to the engine to minimise nitrous oxide pollution. Also, with 75k on the clock, there will be deposits throughout the engine which immediately contaminate the oil. The diesel engines have an outstanding reliability record so don't be overly concerned.

I had my 30,000 km service and checked the oil immediately afterwards in the dealer's car park. The first pull of the dipstick was very black, but luckily dipped it back in and the 2nd sample was more translucent brown with tint of black. I think member Instroe has done a wonderful guide on this very subject.
