Hi all,

Been a while since I've been here as I've mostly been out enjoying my i30, which has so far given me just over 3 years of trouble free motoring :-)

I've recently been told my brake pads need replacing, and this is something I'm confident I can do myself. I just wanted to know if anyone has any recommendations as to which brake pads to buy, and also if they need to be of a certain type so that I don't invalidate what's left of my warranty.

Thanks in advance,
Andy

I had mine replaced last Wednesday (105,000 miles from new). Normally I'd do them myself but as I was desperate and the weather was crap I booked a slot at the dealers.

The pads were £45 (front) and £38 (rear), plus VAT. Total fitted price was £175 which included internal & external valet, plus full safety check.

The pads I'd found on eBay ranged from £18 to £65 but I just knew the lower priced versions would not have a quality base compound, plus I'd have had to wait for them to be delivered, and I couldn't.

At that price you might have got 1 days wear out of them...............

I chose EBC Greenstuff for the most recent cars that I have done the brakes on and had no complaints. http://www.ebcbrakeshop.co.uk/?gclid=CJSipMrbx7cCFUfKtAodoiwAiw

Hi Andy.
Can you tell us what country you're in?
That'll help guys on here immensely as far as suggesting brands and suppliers.
Also, what kilometers/miles have you done? Any pulsation in the brake pedal, squealing when you brake etc?

I'm not doubting you Phil. It's just there's no info in his profile.

Hi all,

Yep, I'm from sunny Manchester, UK. That's supposed to be ironic, although it is actually quite sunny here today for a change... !

Thanks for the responses. My car has done 53,000 miles or thereabouts. No squealing or funny responses from the brakes yet, I probably have a little life left in them, I'm just at the getting prepared stage at present.

So I take it any decent quality pads will be OK, no need to get Hyundai specific ones installed to make sure the warranty isn't voided?

Regards
Andy

The only way you could be pretty sure of that is by taking the car into your dealer really, pads are a wear and tear item and s long as you don't damage any ABS components all should be good.

Bendix general CT pads are probably one of the best, from what I researched they are better than the bendix Ultimate

I have bought Protext Blue for the front and rear (which I got from work for a pretty good price) I found they were equal to the bendix ct apart from the fact that they need to be bedded in (bendix ones don't need bedding in). Protext ones where about $50 cheaper for me which is mostly why I decided to go with them.

In all my cars i have gone with Bendix CT's,  found them to be super reliable, and out of all the others i have tried seemed to have the least heat fade issues. Also seemed good in the crap house cold weather that we have in the blue mountains.
and as jesse said they dont need bedding in cause of their fabulous "stripe"

Personally, given the impressive distances being recorded before the original pads need changing, this might be one of those rare occasions where I would throw some genuine ones back in (unless they were stupidly priced).

I was used to doing the front pads every 50-60k in the old car, so to hear people getting 100k plus out of a set of pads is truly impressive and I would reluctant to change unless price was an issue (and I couldn't find a cheaper genuine set on Ebay).

Also be careful not to get too harder pad, this can see the pads take out the discs fairly quickly (my EL did a front set of discs in 60k, changed the pad to a softer compound and never had another problem (and I sold it at 200k).

Of course if the originals do not suit your driving style, the originals are priced at a level that would constitute robbery or I intended to sell the vehicle in the near future and obtaining 'value' was less important than 'price' this would effect my decision.

Do both the front and back need replacing? Usually you get considerable more distance from the rears, as they do less work. Some will replace both at once, but I'm firmly of the opinion that if I can get another 30k from them safely they are staying in until they need doing. I justify this on a both environmental and economic base (see sometimes they can work together!)

Thanks guys for all your input. On the recommendation of a mechanic friend, I got some Pagid pads, they seem to get good reviews. I'll let you know how I find them once I manage to fit them!
