Sure.
The FD was the original i30 model that was manufactured between 2007 and 2012.
Its replacement is the GD which is the new shape.
The FD really established the marque (certainly in Australia) and the later FDs with the updated U2 engine and 6 speed manual are considered by many to be the pick of the bunch, especially in cw (wagon) form.
Whilst in FD spec, the auto was the old 4 speed, whereas in GD spec the auto is a 6 speed which is a much better transmission with tiptronic shift and a greater spread of ratios which assists both performance and economy.
All great cars though that have become known for their reliability and frugality (with the exception of a limited and small number of FD cars with the 4 speed auto transmissions that suffered some issues, fixable under warranty).
It is probably accepted (but open to discussion of course) that build quality was at its peak in the later FD cars from the South Korean plant. Czech cars weren't quite up to the same standard (but almost were) and the later GD cars seem to have slipped just a little (but still mighty fine cars).
I'm happy to stand corrected here.
The FD had 2.0 litre petrol engines and later in its model life, 1.6 litre petrol engines. The pick here is the 2.0 litre.
The new shape GD did away with the two petrol engine options and is offered with only a 1.8 litre petrol engine (as in Elantra) which offers increased power and torque figures over the older 2.0 litre.
The diesel options remains as the U2 1.6 litre turbo diesel which is a great engine that offers frugal economy and plenty of torque.
Remember, Hyundai in South Korea have had decades of experience in designing and manufacturing diesel engines for trucks in their home market and their expertise certainly shows in their range of passenger car diesel engines sold globally.
Hope this helps.

So the later FD had the U2 drivetrain? 5 or 6 speed in the manual? I'm interested now.

Only the diesel scored the 6 speed manual, Keith....
The petrol lovers had to make do with the 5 speed.  :D

and I have one of each and with ongoing discrepancy,I still don't think the U2 set up is any great deal better the the original setup(then in steps Phil  ) OMO,but I can say both cars we have are great and I'm happy with both options, but my preference is to drive the earlier produced model.
