Not sure if related but started seeing minor flickering of the speedo needle, would say be going along in cruise control at 110 but needle drops really fast about 5km or so then goes straight back to 110. As if the signal from the engine cut out for a second.

(Speedo cables normally work by a series of electrical pulses from a speed sensor)

Maybe happens once every 100km (or at least the times I notice it)

Then last night driving canberra to sydney, cruise the whole way to sutton mcdonalds, no issues, went in thin came out fat etc but when I got back on the highway cruise didn't work. The cruise on off light on the dash came on. But when I press the set button it would not light up on the dash at all, nor did it set the speed. Pressed reset, cancel, increase cruise on off a number of times. Pulled over and turned off the car, turned back on and cruise worked as normal again.

As if nothing had happened only 30 seconds prior. Anyone had a similar issue? Time to go to hyundai I think?

A mate of mine had problems with his but I am not aware of the actual symtoms.

The dealer eventually replaced and fixed it after several "check connections"

Is it possible that you hadn't pressed the brake at least once. CC won't engage if brake not used at least once.

I've had the same issue a couple of times, normally after either refuelling or stopping for a "comfort break".  It is fixed by touching the brake pedal. As Dazz said, the CC needs the brakes to be working in order to engage.

The bit about the speedo needle flickering is interesting.

On my previous car (MG/ZR) I had exactly that problem. It turned out that the ECU wasn't fastened tightly to the body of the car, so it had a wobbly/intermittent earthing problem, which lends some credence to panthersteve's comment...

Like Dazz and Jamie said, hit the brake pedal when this happens, normally sets mine right, also as Jamie says, happens to my car when I stop for fuel and then head of again(not every time but, but quite often)

ahh yep, I would not have used the brakes, reversed into the carpark and it was 1am so no traffic I had to wait for at the ntersection then bam left turn and 110 on the highway.

I guess I won't complain, its probably a safety feature (which doesn't do much good cause hey at the end of the day, regardless of being at 110 with cruise or without - brakes aren't working you're up sh!t creek, no paddle)

Ill speak to the dealer next service about the speedo needle, not really major unless it suddenly decides to kick the bucket, in which case i'm glad I don't live in VIC with a 1km/h tollerance to speeding.

I think it is testing the logic of the cruise control, and not so much the brakes.  That is, it is checking that it is getting signal from the brake light switch to deactivate the cruise control.

I think it was only after replacement of the switch which had issues talking to the CC.
They issued a second replacement switch which fixed it.

Whilst using the Cruise Control, I often wonder, "What happens if I suddenly fall ill", or something prevents me from disconnecting the c/c in an emergency.
For that reason, I have shown my Wife how to cancel it.
(Not that I knowingly have a relevant health problem :))
