Greetings,

Currently running a subscribed version of Avast which is due for renewal in a few days. However I have also had cause to run Malwarebytes, (free version), which, during it's scan has found and quarrantined 12 pup key files. They offer a premium version which has real time protection. Why is Avast missing these files even though I have firewall, real time protection and internet protection currently active on this program. Should I swap to Malwarebytes or stay with Avast

Currently running Win7(64) & Chrome

Phil Malwarebytes isn't an anti-virus, it is designed to compliment your AV.

PUP = Potentially Unwanted Program and these can be good or bad depending on what has been detected, for avast to detect pups you would first need to enable that option as it's disabled by default.

In your scan settings you need to enable PUP detection and also enable it in the Web Shield settings and File Shield settings.

Most PUP's come as browser addons/toolbars bundled within certain programs installers.

In my Windoze Daze I recommended AVG Free to any who asked, considering Avast a good alternative. I now use Linux and I'm happily out of practice with those particular strategies. :whistler: :happydance:

Avast runs very happily on Windows systems even with the Pro version of Malwarebytes :)

Lakes@ Mac's maybe less susceptible to infections from viruses but it is still possible, as the Mac userbase/share hold grows it becomes more of a worthy target for those that wish to write code to affect those systems, we see plenty of affected Mac's which is why there are many AV companies who look after these system also ( including Avast )

As an XP user I never once got infected, with sensible use of good 3rd party tools. As a Linux user now for the last 3 years, still no problem with NO additional tools - certainly no anti-virus - but I'll be sure to post if it happens. Surfing and emailing practices have far more to do with infection than tools. As has been said before,  PLBKAC. :victory:

Yes good surfing habits certainly play a huge role in any virus free system - not 100% foolproof though but good to hear that you both show reasonable ( responsible ) surfing practices  :goodjob2:
