Just picked up a 2010 i30 SLX Wagon (Diesel, Auto and in Phantom Black).. thing is that it’s due for its 180,000km Service in a couple of weeks

Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations on where i should take it to get serviced? (specific to Newcastle area would be extra helpful)

The previous owner (from Sydney) had it serviced every 15,000km at Suttons City Hyundai. Should i be taking to my local hyundai dealer aswell (especially since I've just bought it, its almost out of warranty and it's a major service) or should i save my money and take it to an local independent?

Any advice/tips here on servicing would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Hi & welcome.
I get mine serviced at an independent.
But given that yours has always been serviced by Hyundai and is almost out of NCW, I'd consider going to a Hyundai dealership.
You'd need to be happy that the 4 speed auto trans is healthy prior to the warranty expiring IMO, but others will have their say too.  :)

Might I suggest your Newcastle Hyundai dealership for TLC.  You would have one in your city, even my town has a Hyundai dealership and we only have 20,000 inhabitants normally, rising to 100,000 at Christmas when the Canberrans arrive on the coast.  But they are rich, BMW's, Range Rovers, Mercs, Audis, overpaid public servants all. :disapp:

Yes, make sure the trans oil is always clean. The valve mechanism can be troublesome if the oil is dirty. I have 2 autos an no issues with them at all. If there is any hesitation when selecting gears, particularly R,  REPORT IT so that it is on record b4 warranty expiry.

If it is like the 90,000k service Hyundai will want close to a grand to do it.....and they only change the Auto Transmission fluid, they do not flush the transmission at all.

I got my 90k done by my mechanic, and had the auto serviced by an automatic specialist, I had the transmission flushed and still from memory saved $300 on what Hyundai wanted. Get a quote from the dealer and see what you think....

I'm pretty sure someone on here has already praised them (Klosters - also Ford, IIRC).

Just completely overlooked something.. the car was previously owned (and bought new 4 and a bit years ago) by a business (wine company in syd) this would mean i am outside the warranty period now as it has done more than 130000km yes? should this give me more reason to go with an independent now

Hey matt, im from Newcastle. Klosters Hyundai would be the best on Tudor St in Hamilton. I havent found a good independent spot that does good work. Whatever you do, dont use thompsons auto on Maitland Rd.

Also i would go there and see about the warranty. Im pretty sure you wouldn't. But they might be able to cut you a deal if you wanted to add an extended warranty.  No guarantees but.

Was tossing up between Klosters Hyundai or Lake Macquarie Hyundai at Cardiff (bit closer to home), but if you've had a good experience there il be sure to take it into Hamilton.

Confirmed with Hyundai Customer Care today on the phone that warranty ran out at 130,000km due to it being purchased as a company car. Thanks for the advice with the warranty and avoiding Thompson Auto (if i go anywhere else my local is Charlestown Steering anyway, very good with the other cars in the house)

If you've got a regular place you go to, then I'd take it there.

yeah will be calling them up first thing monday, have to check how well they'll go with a diesel i30's major service as its normally just an old commodore and corolla i take there. Should be no problem but ld say il spend the extra $'s to take it to a dealer this once since I've just bought the car and they would be getting plenty more diesel i30s through there. Hopefully that way it will one good check over and major service done thoroughly.

If you choose to go to a dealer, you can save a few bucks by supplying all filters and oils. The dealers mark up the prices a fair bit. The oil for Diesel must be ACEA B4 type as displayed on the rear of the container 5.3 litres full synthetic 5-40 if possible but 10-40 is ok too. You should be able to locate filters at an auto shop. Normally I would prescribe OEM filters but as you afe out of warranty, any reputable brand should be ok.

If it were me I would be selecting a trusted independent mechanic using only the best oil with non OEM filters. Dealer services are usually OK but no better than a good independent. Make sure an independent has a good OBD diagnostic computer and software. Access to third party ECU updates is essential. A good independent will save you big $$$$$$$s. At 180k and no warranty, what is the purpose of using the dealer high cost servicing, non that I can see

great advice, only problem is that id have to find a good independent with proper a OBD diagnostic computer and software.. not sure that my current trusted local would have access to third party ECU updates as you suggested (doesn't deal a whole lot with newer model small cars, particular diesel i believe) Will check all this out on monday though with them regardless

If you're happy with the way the car is running, an ECU update may not be necessary. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it.)

I agree but, it would be nice to know that if an update was available and it was beneficial to the operation of the vehicle, the independent mechanic had access to and the ability to install the update

Don't worry about ecu updates. We don't do that many to start with and they are only to rectify concerns. So if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Plus I don't know how your chosen workshop would get the update. We certainly don't give them out.

If I was worried about an ECU update, I probably would wait until a cheaper service  :whistler:

If you are prepared to travel to Gosford, I can recommend a good independent mechanic there. Let me know....
