Finger-vein readers are to be used by bank customers to access their accounts from next year in a drive by Barclays to combat fraud.

The Biometric Reader can read and verify the user's unique vein patterns in the finger and will initially be available to corporate banking clients.

Barclays said that by scanning their finger, customers will be able to access their online bank accounts and authorise payments within seconds, without the need for PIN, passwords or authentication codes. Unlike finger prints, vein patterns are difficult to replicate.

And transplant it.

So, if the bank doesn't hold a record of your finger, how does it get authenticated

The bank will have to get a fingerprint just like it gets a sample signature now. Cut finger? The veins may collapse and fail the test. :winker:

The article says,

"Barclays said the scanned finger must be attached to a live human body in order for the veins in the finger to be authenticated. Barclays will not hold the user's vein pattern and there will be no public record of it."

Maybe a PIN, perhaps.

I am waiting for the day that retinal scanning becomes a viable reality in security applications.

It is much more difficult to pop an eye out than cut a thumb off, although the fact that this uses the veins in your thumb makes it a lot better and probably safeguards you from having a digit cut off.

I think fingerprint readers are unhygienic too; we have them at work (ONLY these readers - no code to bypass) and I cringe everytime I use them

I think that rectal scanners would be the go.
No two are the same, so I'm told.   :undecided:
