G'day all,

Well our little 2008 i30 is well and truly out of warranty now but there is a 'clunking' noise in the steering that is really starting to bug me.  It started to make itself known whilst the car was nearing the end of the warranty and I made the dealer aware of it, but of course it was a "we'll keep an eye on that" type of response.  I should have pushed a bit harder but never mind.

Now that the early i30's are starting to get a few kms on and they are out of warranty, has anyone else experienced this problem?  It is most noticeable when rocking the steering wheel slightly from side to side when either stationary or at low speed.

I'd be interested to find out if others are having the same issues.

I don't s'pose you had something in writing that you raised the steering as an issue whilst still in warranty 

If so, you have a case.

We've had many such occurrences in the older FD series - there may be something in the search results that you can use...

I would start by just rocking the steering and try to locate the knock. I've never looked at these columns but i would think that there is one or two steering column knuckles, i would check to see if there is any play in them or if there is any pinch bolts that may need tightening, I would check all the nuts and bolts that are along the column. Also check the steering rack securing brackets are secure.

My 2005 XD Elantra had the same issue all its life. The dealer would fix the steering nuckles and it would come back a few months later. in the end I just gave up and lived with it. If you can find a decent steering specialist, I'd go to them and now waste your breathe with Hyundai.
