Hi, All.

I have a  2013 UK spec.  i30 Active, 5 door, 1.4 petrol, - which I took delivery of in December 2013,
Overall I am Very Pleased with the car, - I now have c.6,000 miles on the clock, and it drives beautifully,
However for the past 1,000 miles or so I have been aware of a “Chattering” type sound omitting from the front offside Drive-shaft, or Steering rack, it can only be heard while driving at slow speed, typically = Parking Manoeuvres, Three Point Turns, - very audible in enclosed multi story car parks for instance,

I personally suspected a CV Joint on RH wheel side, = so returned to dealership to have it checked out. = Had a mechanic sit along side me while I drove the car performing the aforementioned manoeuvres, and Yes he could also hear the low frequency “Chattering” sound (which he agreed  was not usual) - He then took the car into the workshop, placed the car on ramp and removed the r.h. road wheel, and checked drive shaft and CV joints, all were found to be in good, as new, condition.

I would be grateful if anyone else on this forum, that may have has experienced this problem, can come up with any ideas . ….......
Many Thanks.

Not experienced this myself and I cannot recall seeing it reported on the forum.

However, if your mechanic agreed that there was something "not quite right", it should be fully investigated under warranty.

Is the noise when you turn the steering or do you have to be driving to get it to happen?

Thanks, Shambles, & Cruiserfied

My "chattering/knocking/rumbling" sound,  seems to have increased, and I am now fairly sure it is the Steering Rack, or EPS that is the culprit.

I have returned to the Hyundai Dealership, and again had a mechanic to listen to the sound,
he agrees that it is not normal, = also we took out an i30 of the same model for a test, performing the same manoeuvres, and that made NO Sound at all,

The sound may only be audible at low speed, but is probably there also during normal driving speeds, but is inaudible due to engine and road noise.
It also is there when the car is stationery and steering wheel is turned right or left (with engine running for EPS)

Therefore they have agreed to have the car in for a day or two on Aug 4th (earliest time courtesy car was available) = lets hope the find the problem.

I will report back on the findings.

Thanks for your replies.   :goodjob:

Hi, All.

I now have the aforementioned sound in Stereo, as it is no longer only emitting from offside,  but now from the nearside also.
I therefore now suspect the track rod ends.  I have also managed to arrange an earlier visit  to the Dealership,  now booked for 1st August, let's hope it is something that simple.
If so, the track rod ends must have not been lubricated correctly during manufacture, (I can well remember the time when they were all fitted with a grease nipple)
Wish me luck.

No lubrication at all these days.

Me again. "According to our local owners' reports", as to the knocking sound, That means there's a gap in the mechanism when operating. They replaced this assembly.

It is the upper part of this picture.

As to the chattering sound like a bird, it came from the electric motor.

Hi. All. --  Latest Update.

Returned my i30 to Dealership Workshops yesterday morning as prearranged, to allow them a full day to determine the cause of the “Chattering” sound,

Received  a phone call from the Service receptionist 1500rs “Good News we have found the cause of the noise, - it is the upper joint of the Right Side Drive Shaft”       (which had been ruled out on the first inspection)

So they will order the necessary parts to change the (diff. end) CV Joint and its associated parts, on r/h Drive Shaft, and will inform me when the parts arrive, as I can then return the car to have the defective bits replaced.

Still Crossing My Fingers in Anticipation.

Hi. again,  Latest,=
I called at the dealership last Friday. --  Apparently there was a miscommunication between - The Workshops, -Service Receptionist,- and Myself, - it should have read, = "They are going to change the Upper Ball Joint, and its associated parts"  (on the offside suspension unit)

And the parts still have not arrived yet, latest ETA early part of September, - Thankfully I am still able to use the car, - (Big ?? in my mind though, over the lack of  reasonable availability of Hyundai parts.-  Order placed August 1st ) I have now been trying to get this fault rectified since the early part of June.   :head_butt:

Latest Update,  My feeling of Relief lasted 2 or 3 days then Chattering Returned, -  intermittently at first,  and now permanently again,

I have contacted dealership and spoke to the Mechanic that did the repair,  -  Car goes back in next Tuesday for a further inspection.

Unfortunately The Saga Continues.

I have just collected the repaired i30 from the dealership.  > After doing a test drive on the car,  = the noise has Completely Disappeared.  :happydance:

The dealership Tech. Had apparently contacted the technicians at Hyundai UK, and it appears there has been a few occurrences of this particular noise being reported, including an i30 belonging to one of their own Technicians.

The Definitive Fix is, =  Simply, lubricate the top “Bumper Rubbers” on the “Front Suspension Struts” with PTFE Grease, as these are drying out, and its this unusual type of friction noise, of the rubber against metal that is being heard.
(should become part of the normal service schedule)

The dealership also kindly Photographed the affected parts involved, while the work was being carried out, so I was able to see exactly what was being explained,
I'm Very Pleased with Their work.

I hope this information will be of use, as there must be a few more i30's out there, where this problem may occur.   :goodjob2:

The Photographs were displayed on their Service Dept Monitor, so unfortunately I am unable to reproduce them here.

However if you use the link below you should be able to view a detailed Drawing  of the Front Suspension Leg.

I found this in   =   :link: TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins)

                    TSB.  =  20/5/2010  HFE09-21-P261-HDFD   FRONT STRUT NOISE REPAIR (FROM SHOCK ABSORBER'S BUMBER-STOP)

Although this is a fix for a different set of symptoms, it also relates to the problems I have experienced  in the above posts.
