A British record sum of £518,000 including taxes and fees has been paid for a personalised registration at auction.

The plate '25 O' was sold at a three-day DVLA event in Cardiff marking the 25th anniversary of the Personalised Registrations sales.

The buyer, John Collins, owns Talacrest, a dealer in rare classic Ferraris and just hours after paying £130,320 for the registration '250 L' he spent almost five times as much on '25 O'.

What makes them so special?

Over here we have to follow a strict standard for reg plates.

Wearing plates like those, closely resembling the marque of car, shows that you can afford to "stand out" in the crowd.

It also means you have a small penis.

Thanks. I thought they might have meant something about Ferraris since the guy was a dealer.
Cheaper to move to Australia and get personalised plates. We've got over 50 styles to pick from in NSW.

I wouldn't even pay A$518 for those numbers!

I know there is some significance with Ferrari 250 (but really) :fum:

I had personalised plates a few years back.  Luckily they were "issued" to me by the local authority, it had my initials and my year of birth on them.  The only catch was I had to change my name for it to fit.  So I chose the name "Edward Stickland", hence the numberplate ES-1971 was personalised.

I did buy Mrs FatBoy personalised plates for her 40th birthday (MEL-040) and my father plates for his 60th (ROG-45).  Both were less than $400.

Mine have been personalised since 1986 for an initial cost of $50 and no more than normal registration ever since. :victory:

I've told the story before, but best deal I ever got with personalised plates was a demo model 1991 SSS Nissan Pulsar we bought (in 1991)

The Rego was DB1906 and at the time both myself and my wife had the initials DB and my YOB was 1956 and hers was 1960!

Our rego plates now are EYE 030 and DAZ 001 and they were only, one of,  $295 payment each!

I've got initials and birthdate TO486. I got them from my wife for a birthday (I researched, organised and payed for them but they were from her. Go figure?)
I got them a few years after they put a $90p/a fee on my style. Black plate with white lettering. But they're the same style my Dad has had for as long as I can remember with his initials and birthdate :)
Guy at RTA warned me to get covers, apparently they are classic style and will cost $200 to re-make if lost or damaged.
Wife has same thing but reversed colours on the Elantra.

I've never had personal plates but my brother had a good set on his XA coupe " XALENT " they were only $250 when he had them done many years ago and he had been offered several thousand for them...they got sold with the coupe a couple of years ago and that money paid for his Ducati and a few other toys.

I've got 1DRB 000 on mine which is my initials plus the 000 and they cost me bugger all because they're state plates.
I've got a few sets of personalised plates for my other cars but they keep putting the cost of purchase up.   :disapp:
