Drivers in England will be banned from smoking in their cars if they are carrying children as passengers.

The move, which will become law on 1 October, follows a similar ban in Wales and aims to protect young people under 18 from second-hand smoke. Scotland is also considering introducing a ban.

Anyone found flouting the law in England could be fined £50

Which brings us round to the old question, "Do you smoke after sex?"

My dad is a lifelong smoker.  He keeps complaining that they are making it more restrictive on him, and that it is a legal drug.  I tried to explain to him that if they had of known long ago what they know now, it wouldn't be legal.  He always says, "I smoke and I vote."  Again I remind him that he is definitely in the minority now (less than 25% of adults in Australia smoke).

I don't mind if people smoke, it is their money and their lungs.  What I do have a problem with is when I have to share it with them and it isn't my choice.

The cost of smoking to health care far outweighs the revenue from taxes.  I heard one smoker say that if all revenue raised from taxing cigarettes was used in health care, then all smokers would have their own private hospital rooms.  Really?  He needs to do primary school maths again.  If a packet of cigarettes costs $30 (an extreme, but stay with me), and the average smoker is a pack a day smoker, and ALL of the money went to health care, then they are only getting $30 a day from the cigarettes.  My last visit to a hospital cost a lot more than that for a day.

Above the Australian average, but not by much.  18.8% for Tasmania, 18% for Australia.

Smoking is more prevalent in lower socio-economic groups.  So those that can't afford to smoke, generally do.  Those that can afford to smoke, generally don't.

As has been said, smoking is the choice of the person,it has also been said that it is more common in the lower socio groups, this being partly true, I came from a family and an era where not a lot was Know about the consequences of smoking also at a time when yes smoking was condoned and recommended by many doctors, with age comes wisdom and many times I wonder what could have been, but I do not wish to change the past, the decision I have made in the past (although not good for my health) would have changed who I have become, I do try to convince the younger ones not to take up the habit, just by relating my story, same as the other So called legal drug,Alcohol, All governments only pay lips service to these two harmful habits, if they truly wanted people to stop like other drugs they would make their use Illegal.

You say this is not fair, but until governments wake up, things will never change, yes those who like illegal drug users, will always find a source of their chosen drug, but the the majority of the honest law abiding people will stop using what is harmful to them
