Hi folks
Has anyone out there got a problem with a misty film on the inside of their windscreen that's really very hard to remove ?
I  am the first owner and its never seen cigarette smoke so I believe its 'vinyl fog'.
Particularly bad in this case as its sits in the sun all day. I have always used a windscreen shield but I believe the heat alone makes the vinyl gas and produce this effect.

I have cleaned the windscreen almost every day for weeks hoping to wear through this film and maybe get to clean glass then requiring only a once a week maintenance clean without real success.
So has anyone had this problem and really solved it ?
Over the years I've had many different new cars and the i30 is definitely the worst for this.

Ive tried many glass cleaners, meths, solvents, etc but still haven't really found anything that really melts it away ?

I'm sure many people have the same problem - has anyone solved it ????????

Hi Mal,

Get a Dash mat! It is one of several reasons I use them. The dash produces way less mist, the dash stays cooler (reducing the interior temp) and you get less dashboard reflection in the screen.

If you don't like them for some reason throw a town on the dash when you are parked or use a screen shade.

Cleaning the inside of the windscreen is one of my pet hates, Several well known brands make glass cleaner sprays and wipes specifically for car glass.

Hi Dazzler

I bought one (a dash mat) a couple of years ago and if anything its getting worse !

Having done some research on the net it appears to be a problem many people are having all over the world but mainly in the hot countries (like WA).
Temperatures can easily reach 50, maybe 60 + in an enclosed vehicle while parked in the sun throughout the day here.
I believe at these temps the plastics fumes and the gas condenses on the glass. You can move the 'greasy' like film around with your fingers but the difficulty is lifting it off.
I think many people have tackled this problem and in some cases found something that helps but Ive not heard of a 100% explanation or solution i.e. a solvent / remover.
In my case I can improve it by using lots of meths and clothes, then a glass cleaner with lots of 'elbow grease', but it really doesn't last longer than a few days.
I'm guessing some sort of seal on the plastic dash would be required to stop it happening or it may even be coming from a different area, but I don't think so ?
Having had new Fords & Holdens over the years I can honestly say Ive never seen this before.
Maybe a different type of plastic was used by Hyundai without thought of this happening but in their defence I believe its happening to many of the later vehicles around the world.
It would be interesting to ask the right technical people at Hyundai about this IE those that design and produce the interiors ?
Ive heard it said many times now, that new car smell we all like when we drive a brand new car is the glues and plastics fuming which apparently isnt good for your health ?

PS Like you I hate cleaning the inside of the windscreen too !

I haven't had a problem in 5 years.  Doesn't appear to be on my daughter's Accent either, despite a year in NT.
But we both have dash mats.

someone once pointed out to me that the easiest way to clean the inside off a  windscreen is standing outside the open door and reaching in.
It is.

It may be the case that modern cars are better sealed.  Also, most now have a HEPA filter between the outside air inlets and the inside vents, which restricts air flow when the fans are not activated.

Have you tried a bag of activated charcoal (carbon)?    My previous car used to give me headaches whenever I was in it for a while with the windows closed.  A few bags of activated charcoal eliminated the headaches, and it reduced the plastic smell somewhat.

Hi Folks
Interesting thoughts  tla !
As you said the i30 is certainly well sealed and maybe a bag of charcoal may have an effect.
I'm thinking along the lines of spending a few hours cleaning the screen, removing the dash mat, sealing (as best I can) the dash with cling film, then covering it with a dark cotton cloth. I will only use the aircon switched to floor outlets and see if that makes a difference across a week or so ?
Normally the film will be back within a couple of days ( its mid 30C here in WA).
If its altered by the changes it might say something about the plastics used and their characteristics in the heat ?
If that eliminates the problem I will consider a matt finish vinyl sealer - properly and carfully trialed !

I had one of these given to me as a Christmas present.

It has proved to be very effective and makes reaching the far end of the screen a doddle..

I don't think that will solve your problem. All the plastics in the car will emit esters used in manufacture, this is from the padding in the seats, "carpet"(which is plastic), dash, etc. If the dash is covered by a windscreen protector, then it will not heat excessively, yet fumes are still produced, so excessive temperature is not the cause of the fumes. They will still be produced I suspect.

My understanding is that as the car ages, the emissions become less so just keep using the best windscreen cleaner you can for now. Check with an auto shop who may be able to point you to a reputable effective product.

We get build uo on our car too, but most noticeable in humid or cold conditions. I just use the AC to eliminate the water vapour and it seem ok from there. Naturally, it won't remove the film deposits though.

I might be totally off the ball park with this, but on my Astra windscreen was a type that rejected UV and always looked like it needed cleaning, showed up more on hot days. It was a optional extra, I don't know if HY fit these type of windscreens

You could be onto something there (Shambles has mentioned something about UV windscreen before)

But doesn't explain why some are having more trouble than others??

Maybe not all the chariots have them fitted. I didn't know I had it until I had a cracked windscreen and took it to the local windscreen workshop and they told me they had to order a replacement or I could have a standard glass fitted which they had in stock.

I would of thought it would be standard for the type of climate you have there down under.

Or like some of you have said about the dash. Maybe its glare from the dash

No I don't think UV comes into it.

All windscreens are now laminated, that is, 2 pieces of glass with a plastic laminate fused inside. This laminate, can have a nice tinted band at the top, or a tint through the whole screen (illegal in Oz, I think), no tinting at all and or UV filtering, with or without tint. As you can see there are many options, but non of these affect the grimy build up on the interior surface of the screen.

The laminate acts to filter and toughen the glass against impact, similar to the films applied to shop windows to stop smash & grab thefts.
