A story with two i30s and a Getz - and doesn't involve prangs

So I mentioned in a post, about a story involving two i30s and a Getz - I warn you now it isn't highly technical, rather a recounting.    And Dazzler was interested to see it...   It is also why I have a little bit of knowledge of NZ i30's.   Mentioned no prangs in the subject as it makes it seem like that kind of story... or the start of a joke - 'two i30s and a Getz run into a bar - bang!'

On Feb 6th, a family event occurred & I flew back home (in Kiwi-land) late on the 8th - my brother picking me up.   Mum was still up, as with every night, and we started catching up (even though we talk regularly).   Quite often though, either on the phone or in person, she will mention something with implied prior knowledge - then assure me I knew, before explaining it, in full, anyway.

So I wasn't shocked when she said 'Ohh... So & so will be coming about the new car tomorrow at 4pm'.   I knew the dealer/service they use runs 'buy back' campaigns - offering customers, owning desired vehicles, a trade-up deal to the latest model.   So, knowing she never would have, I over-dramatically raised my hand to my forehead and then to my heart and exclaimed, equally so, "So my dearest darling father dies, and the first thing you are doing is buying a new car? My poor debased mother. Woe, thrice woe!" before loudly sighing in 'dismay' - to which she dead-panned "Yes." before cracking up and calling me an idiot.  :D

The family event, was in fact, Dad's passing - it was an unexpected expected event.   He had limited time left - up to a number of years, but each day a bonus.   The expectation by all was some days 'notice' - much less expected but next most probable was it being 'instant'.   Typically Dad did neither - instead it was just over half a day from calling the ambulance to passing.   But my comment did make Mum realise some people could think that and she asked if she shouldn't - to which my response was that if they wanted to think that they can go get stuffed, as they obviously don't know her much at all.   Apart from fact she just would not - in any event she was too busy organising a funeral *and* finishing a monthly club magazine (A4 16pgs) even though the other editor was now dead!   But that is Mum all over.

So a week, or so, prior a buy-back/trade-up offer had arrived - my parents discussed and decided to go for it.   The new car on offer being an i30 Elite (MY15 AFAIK) which had many features/extras that their then current i30 (a MY14, brought in 2013, seemingly a std. auto model - not sure they knew there was more than one).   So Mum rang up, arranged it and put the phone down.   Then Dad announced he knew he would never drive again, so Mum should trade-in her Getz too, so Mum rang up again - they were happy to, but would need to see it and work out a value.   A cheeky comment made by Dad 'poshly' was "If I am going to be driven around, it must be in style." - referring to the leather trim, etc..

Having seen the death notice, So & so rang up the morning of the day he was to come, to a) pass condolences; b) arrange a new day - if mum still wished to continue.  Mum said to come anyway, but he demurred, and Mum arranged for later that week (so that I would still be there to go over things).   It gave me time to research (in the end via redbook.com.au) what a reasonable value for 5yo (MY10) Getz auto, with 28k on the clock, was - I worked it out to be roughly $9k trade-in value.   But made no difference to us otherwise.

The day came and So & so arrived.   The offer was an new i30 Elite for $18k, plus on roads (~$1k), with trade-in of the current i30 - which had clocked 18k and was about 18 months old.    In NZ asking price for an auto petrol Elite is $39990 (appears the NZ 'Elite' is similar to AU 'Elite', and NZ 'Elite Limited' to AU 'Premium') - making the value of trade-in around $22k (to my parents at least).   Then there was the trade-in of the Getz which, without looking at, they offered $9k.   I am assuming they checked and realised they already knew the condition and k's as they serviced it.   Which is what I had worked out as a middle of range figure for km's relative to age plus condition and servicing.

The salesman then revealed the car he had brought out today to show was, in fact, a used car and would be discounted by $5k if we wanted it - but, being used, didn't get five free services.   However it was the 'right' colour, or he wouldn't have brought it out.   This 'used' car was ~5 months old (rego wise) with 280km on the clock.   It had been registered and parked outside on display by Hyundai, before being brought by the dealership as it could no longer be sold as new (being registered).   Most of the k's, we are told, were actually by the salesman, and another, taking it home (a good distance away) a few weekends for arranged local demos.

In all respects an ex-demo with low Ks - but couldn't really be called such, as the dealership was 2nd owner.   But would, of course, come with the remainder of the 3y/100k warranty - of ~2.5 years.   Having looked it over, arranged for the first service due to be done as pre-delivery and the roof racks to be removed (Mum doesn't use them nor liked the look) and returned to stock at the dealership (value being equivalent to cost of another two services - don't recall if applied as a discount or credit for service), Mum agreed to it.

So Mum got, what is effectively, a new i30 Elite while only needing to outlay ~$5k inc. on-roads - ~$6k if you take into account the two services not otherwise covered.   While rationalising the number of cars and costs - though it does mean there is not a spare when I visit... but I prefer the i30 anyway as it was easier to fold into.

So that is the story of two i30s and a Getz - which Mum kept referring to as 'my poor little Getz' due to lack of use in more recent times.

Wow, that's the longest bit of reading I've done in a while. I usually only read magazines with pictures!  :D

Sorry to hear of your dads passing.  :(

If that is typical of the tone of your posts, we are going to get along "swimmingly" to use an old term ...

I hope you stay around long term!  :goodjob:

Thanks for the condolences everyone.

And the appreciation of the story - usually I am told I write and/or talk too much!

Real Estate, Photography and Cooking magazines I am sure!  :D

Thanks for that.

I will try to aim for it - usually that is how I am.   I am told I can write too much though.

Something to attempt!

Now, on an entirely unrelated note from any of the above, I am worried about why your car has a tongue  :whistler:  :D
