Last Thursday morning – I suddenly had a yen for a nice meaty pork pie in a thin crust pastry.
The most famous pork pies are made in Melton Mobray – in fact no manufacturer is now allowed by law to use the term Melton Mobray Pork Pie – unless it is made in Melton Mobray. Similar restrictions apply to the Term “Cornish Pasty – they have to be made in Cornwall.
We didn’t have anything special to do - the weather was superb with a virtually cloudless sky – so we jumped into the car and drove to Melton Mobray to buy a pork pie from Ye Olde Pie Shoppe.
It took 80 minutes to get there and the odometer said we had travelled 64 miles.
So we bought the pie and some pork sausages – had a browse around the town and drove home. I know we are nuts and it is the most expensive pie ever – probably cost £12 in petrol for the round trip – but it was worth it. I had a chunk of pie for my supper and enjoyed it so much I had indigestion in the night.
On the motorway on the way back we came upon a bright orange car I didn’t recognise (perhaps I was pie eyed)– it was badged Toyota Corolla – a model name that has not been imported into the UK for a few years being replaced by the Auris. It was a pig ugly car, right hand drive and I have definitely not seen one before. It’s registration number is on the DVLA data base as a 1290cc petrol Toyota registered in 2005 in Hampshire.
I have Googled for the model out of curiosity but have not found a trace.
Anyone here have a clue?
