The row follows a boom in diesel cars which until recently were actively encouraged by the EU, UK Governments, politicians and experts because they give better fuel economy and lower emissions of CO2, the so-called 'greenhouse gas' which environmentalists blame for global warming.

But now a U-turn is taking place, as campaigners argue that diesels have a more harmful effect on air quality leading to debilitating and fatal respiratory problems.

Motorists now feel 'conned' that they have been encouraged to buy diesel to help 'save the planet' but are now being penalised for it. Half of all new cars sold are now diesel.

What rubbish, the EU cars are already fitted with DPF's (at the purchaser's expense), so where's the extra pollution and the justification for a discriminatory charge.

The anti-diesel lobby is gaining ground. Particularly after the recent report about diesel being a severe pollutant.

The report was published just before I bought my car. I decided to stick with petrol. Think the writing is on the wall for diesels and it aint good.
