Hey all,

So last week I came home form downtown and when I parked the car and got out (engine off) I heard a hissing sound. At first I thought I was the just the neighbors but as I walked around the rear I realized it was coming from my car! It sounded like it was coming from the two rear wheels. I took a brief video to record the sound:

:link: Data hissing - YouTube

Tonight I came back from the gym and the sound returned but this time I sounded like it was only coming from the drivers side rear... It sounds like the pinpoint of the sound is the caliper but not 100%. My first thought was maybe sometime to do the the electric hand brake?

Any help would be great!

New one on me. Does it stop if you unscrew the filler cap?

I wonder if it's a porous rim???  :undecided:
Tyre air pressure all okay?

I think you might be on the right track, sounds like air pressure releasing from the tank/possibly fuel return line :undecided:

Does it stop suddenly after sounding the same? Or does the hiss decrease in frequency? before fading or stopping.

Asking because decrease in frequency before stopping - is probably pressure release of some kind; or maybe heat dissipation of some metal (and what is heard is it shrinking or as it moves across another surface).  Of course it could be both... heat causing pressure in something else.   In any case it is all the same... as energy is released it take longer for energy to build up for the next.

Though I doubt it is electronic - sudden stopping could indicate something electrical/electronic... a temperature becomes too high (because of the action causing the sound?) or a timeout occurs.

She did again when I got home from work, but only barley, could only just hear it. Opened the fuel cap and nothing happened, no pressure release and the noise didn't stop or change. Tank is also just above half full. Tyre pressure is also fine. The noise sorta makes a bubbling sound at times... Sounds like gas escaping. Definitely sound like its coming from the wheel caliper.

I wonder if the pads have some of that goo behind them ( can't remember what they call it ) to keep them from chattering ? :undecided:

Yes that's it. Seeing it is a bit of a puzzle as a long shot I wondered if this was getting hot under braking and then making a noise when cooling down. Mind you I have used that paste before and never had a problem. I also wondered if there was pin hole in the catalytic converter making a noise if moisture present and drying out when parked. All guess work of course.

We have been hit by an extreme cold change with big frosts every morning so that would explain extra moisture...

She's still hissing at me guys, not very often tho. Anyone have any ideas?

She's also started to make a noise whenever I reverse out of my parking spot of a morning. Only seems to make the noise on a cold morning (been sitting outside all night) and at a almost full turn. The only way I can describe the sound is it sounds like a "swaying sound". I'll try record it the next time it happens. She never did this last winter :/

Currentl at 21000, so I'll mention these to the dealer when she goes in for her 22500 service but I just wanted your guys opinions.

Thanks

Ok so the service was done on Friday.

Looks like I was right. They seem to think it's the handbrake so they've ordered a new part for it to be replaced. Some sort of module for the wheel its self. Also they said the noise I get when doing a sharp reverse turn is normal and is related to the power steering. Mum said this from the beginning, but wasn't sure...

I was also getting a language load error pop up on my touch screen at random times when I turned on the car. Says on the invoice they preformed some sort of restore on the unit to fix but the error is still so their ordering me a new unit... Went to use the maps today and they're not working anymore, it won't go past the agree screen! They use have screwed it when they preformed the restore. :(

The power steering is electric, so how can there be a "noise" from it

That is one of the best things about Electric Power Steering (NO squeal on full lock) :undecided:

The only noise I get from my EPS is more radio crackle & less reception on AM radio when on full lock either way.
