Remember that Queenslanders have trouble adding or subtracting the number one, from any other number.   :whistler:

That is the main reason that Queenslanders don't want Daylight Savings.  Besides, they will be too busy deciding which town to place the NRL Premiership Trophy.

All jokes aside, most of Qld is well west of the parts of Australia that have (need) Daylight Savings.

And it really doesn't matter which city gets the NRL trophy. At least it'll be in QUEENSLAND!

It's not the west that reduces the need, it is the distance from the Equator.  Hobart is well west of the majority of the population of Queensland, yet still likes Daylight Savings.  SA is also west of Queensland.

Luckily for the rest of Australia, the REAL Grand Final is played this Saturday.  No Queensland teams playing in that one.   :whistler:

I disagree with that. You can't compare one time zone with another. Most of Qld is well west of where the EST zone begins (ie somewhere just east of Byron Bay. The further west you go from there, the less the need for daylight saving. It'd be bloody near midnight before the sun went down in Mt Isa or Broken Hill.

Yep, my bad, can't compare different timezones.   :head_knock:

The major reason for the benefits of daylight saving is the distance from the equator.  We get more hours of sunlight in Tasmania in summer, than Queensland does.  The clocks are moved forward one hour to enable better use of that sunlight after work/school time.  Even with daylight savings, the sun rises at 5:20 am ish in the middle of December, and sets after 8:40 pm, giving over 15 hours of daylight.  Brisbane has an hour and a half LESS daylight per day for the same period.  Cairns has over two hours less daylight per day in Summer than Hobart does.

Birdsville has about the same amount of daylight as Brisbane (around the same distance from the equator).  Sunrise here during the summer solstice is 5:48am, with Sunset at 7:43pm.  In Winter the times change to 7:29am for sunrise and 6:00pm for sunset.  So even if the time did advance by an hour, then sunrise is still before what it would be in Winter.

The 10 hour difference from the 0 meridian would be at the 150 degree mark, just west of Rockhampton.  All of Tasmania is west of that longitude.  The majority of the population of Queensland (Brisbane, Sunshine and Gold Coast) live east of that line.

Have a play with the places and dates on this website, you will see where Daylight Savings would be of benefit.

Regardless Trev, I agree that Daylight Savings isn't as useful in Queensland.

Rusty NSW make $30mill from this so happy some of it will flow in from VIC too. Plus state government sponsoring it & locking up the grand final for years to come.

NEWS LTD sponsoring the AFL i like both, but puzzled why rather is called foot ball? both can use hands, i think AFL is what they have played in Australia thousands of year is that true?

I love it Phil as we get more daylight, like if you go out at night the sun still up till 8pm NSW  stays up till about 9pm or 9.30pm in Tassie then you head up the sunshine state & its dark at about 6pm , but what ever you like.
Go Cowboy's! reason i would like to see Cowboys win is JT!!!

I used to say it was a place so good that they named it twice.  After living there for two years, I reckon it is such a big hole that it has an echo.   :whistler:

My Mum used to say that too.. I believed her until we went there! It was only a stop over point (not a destination) :winker:

The other thing, and I come from a land with daylight savings so I am for it in general, is that also there is another downside to it...

It would move the, usually, hottest part of the day one hour later - so esp. in summer... after-school sports, etc. people would have hotter temperatures to deal with.   Not saying things would be hugely cooler an hour later but still a factor.
