Hi All

I bought my first Hyundai i30 Premium 1.6crdi 2015 just after Christmas 29th.
I hope you can help with a couple of small issues
The electric brake every time I try to let it off I roll back sometimes it will go off as I press it down it is when it stays on I have to press the brake to release it as my drive is on a slope I roll back slightly by the time I get my foot on the excelerator  what am I doing wrong

Also I want to fit some boot and side protetors on the car are they easy tp fit as the local garage wants an arm and a leg to fit.

Thank you all for reading this hope it makes sense

Hi Jocky and  :welcum:

My wife's Tourer is a base model so has a standard handbrake, however our other non-Hyundai car has an electric handbrake which automatically disengages when you drive off. I would have assumed the Premium i30 was the same. Try it and see if the light goes out. This will stop your problems if it is the case.

The protectors should come with instructions (can't be that hard) I've applied side decals (Transfers) to three of our cars without a problem and I think what you are talking about would be easier than that.

Dazz is right. The handbrake will disengage when driving off. May require seatbelt on to meet parameters, some models do some dont.

Ah, safety interlocks! Here in durian country, the seatbelt sign, although flashing, is always silent and the reversing beeper works on the INSIDE of the cabin - crazy bastards!  :crazy1:

That beeper on the inside is a new Toyota enhancement  :crazy1: (My Brother's Prius does it)  :fum:

As if you wouldn't know if you were reversing.

I second what cruiserfied said - I was driving my Mum's Elite (NZ market's Premium) which has electronic hand-brake.

When you put it in gear the hand-brake would release automatically - though an interesting note made to me by both Mum and Brother was that...

  • If you put it into gear 'too quickly' - it wouldn't automatically release.

I never had that issue - but for both to observe and make comment it must happen.   As the car was always parked at home nose in - I am assuming 'too quickly' means one of a couple of things... a) changing into gear right after engine start; b) changing into gear then very quickly afterwards using the accelerator pedal; c) only when going to D from P moving rapidly through R & N; or maybe some combination of the above.

Can't recall if the seat-belt had anything to do with it for NZ.  Putting the seat-belt on is so second nature that I can't recall if I put it back on after stopping to check the mail - house well back from road - when coming home and if I didn't... whether or not I needed to release the hand-brake.

I don't like the sudden jerk as the handbrake disengages on my Calais, so I don't use it unless on a slope.  :-[ :whistler:

Don't you have your foot on the standard brake though, Dazz

When you take off in drive with the electronic brake engaged, it takes a second or so to let go. Makes it harder to move away smoothly, especially in reverse.

My Cee'd automatically releases the EPB when it senses throttle application and does not need the seatbelt engaged, I would think that the i30 would be the same?

If not I would try applying the footbrake first before trying to pull off, this would activate the HAC so that when you release the EPB the car will be held for a few seconds allowing roll back to be minimised.

As an aside the Hyundai/Kia EPB must be better than the Vauxhall/Holden one, it doesn't jerk when it lets go.

One note about driving Mum's i30 with an electric handbrake for ~2.5 weeks...   I keep forgetting to release mine now!  :whistler:   Luckily I pull it on enough that it is obvious immediately.

Hi , I fitted door protectors etc to my I30 comfort and its not difficult. I was told the specific I30 ones were no longer made but the same size kit for the I20 is still available ( UK location for me) I was able to transpose my old badge to the i20 ones.
fitting is easy if you can use a tape measure and have a reasonable eye to get the protectors on straight. Most people put electrical tape or similar on first under the line of where the protector is to go to make sure its level and  in the correct place. Obviously the panel needs to be cleaned first.
Be aware that the panel should be warn to the touch prior to fitting protector so that adhesive goes off ( takes 24 hrs to be sure) I used a hair drier to be sure panel was warm and use carefully of course. It is best not to use power washers on these protractors as I found that they gradually loosen after 2  or 3 years if you do!!
No experience with electronic hand brakes , hate them and will avoid buying car with it
Good luck

... that sounds a bit funny, no experience,  yet you hate them!

They do have advantages. For example, I pull a manual handbrake on too hard for my "slightly built" wife to undo...

Plus when they are on, they are on (bit like a condom) LOL

Some people put a manual handbrake on, but not really on enough.

Like h2Olondon I would prefer the good old type handbrake.

With the electric one you can't use the handbrake to save understeer when there's snow on the road because the electric brake on all 4 wheels when applied at speed. If you, like me want to do some of the service yourself, it's more difficult with the electric ones as you need to find out how to get the pistons back when you want to replace pads and rotors.
