Noticed this a week or two back...  both the number plate lenses have split, basically down the middle.   Last time I had the car serviced they told me the bulbs were blown - which I found odd (but not impossible) that I hadn't noticed, as I often either check my rear lights in a window (at night at the shops) or walk behind the car with the lights on, but it may have just happened. I had them replace the bulbs.  Maybe this (the crack) was the reason - but they didn't mention it.   Being external trim the 5year/unlimited ks warranty doesn't cover it, AFAIK.

EDIT: See next post - cause incorrect bulb wattage.

Has anyone else had this happen? Or have noticed this has happened?

Any thoughts what, if anything, to do?

My eBay foo has deserted me on this - can't seem to find parts.

BTW I do leave my lights on (low beam) as DRLs - maybe that has something to do with it.

UPDATE: Incorrect bulbs were fitted last service, found out when one of the bulbs blew.

The lenses state 5W (top right above screw - '12V C5W') - when I went to change (actually first to discover physical size) the blown bulb found it was 12V 10W and interestingly discoloured.

Went to Service Center to have it looked at - they are replacing.  Apparently one of the young guys fitted 10W because they were out of 5W.   In his defense *I* will point out that for a number of popular Hyundai models (from the past 5-8 years) the 10W bulbs are correct for number plate - just not the i30, esp. i30cw - still *sigh*.  I have worked in factories so I have seen this happen a few times, was usually up to me as trouble shooter to figure WTF had happened.

So the reason they hadn't mentioned the crack lenses was it hadn't happened.   I was a bit surprised that a bulb had blown, being they were only 6 months old and the previous ones lasted from new (4+ years), but wasn't too concerned as it wouldn't be impossible (bad batch, etc.) and/or though maybe moisture got in via the crack.

As a follow up - the replaces parts still look good as new....

The parts replaced were:

  • 87370 2L300     -     GARNISH ASSY - T/GATE               (this may have needed painting - it was mentioned, but not sure if it was done or they got hold of the correct colour
  • 92501 2L100     -     LAMP ASSY  - LICENSE PLATE       (this includes the release button for the boot)

Good chance the garnish required paint. Normally parts like like that come raw of primed, pre-painted parts normally have a paint code on the end of the p/n.

They replaced the release switch??  Seems excessive.

Yeah - except I think it is all one wiring assembly (at least in cw)... per :link: Either good or bad (or both) news you'd like to share with us

The service manager made comment to me it was an expensive 'lesson' for them - by which I take to mean someone got a kicked-butt (as it wasn't the stocking mix up, when they checked the service invoice the part number was for 10w bulbs)
