Picked up some mud flaps today from Hyundai . $42.50 for front set and the same for the rear set . Was easy to install and dint need to take the tyres of . Think this will help the amount of dirt and crap spray up the side of the car heaps . Notice how on the slx the wheels protrude from the front guard slightly . Worthy investment against stone chips to .

In UK they are known as MUD GUARDS..  I had them fitted after I'd had my car for 6 weeks and I noticed how they kept the spray and mud splatter down..

Worth while investment as the are cheap price.

First week we had the car we took it for a drive to QLD via the Newell and Moree. Beautiful country and long straights make for a good trip (apart from dodging all the skippy's) - Mud Flaps were included in our package but the rear ones weren't available immediately and were fitted after the trip. I noticed a huge build up of dirt and grime on the panels behind the rear wheels so mud flaps are a definite necessity out here. Also noticed a build-up of dirt etc. in the small area behind the panel in front of the rear wheels (Nissan X-Trail has the same problem) - This can really cause problems down the track if there is a build-up of moist material so will take it up with the dealer at the next service.

i probably should, but i never use mud flaps as they cause wind resistance so would expect to use more fuel on average. i always seem to get more front stone chips than side stone chips myself.

An interesting point for debate - The rear trailers on a lot of B-Double's and Road-Trains have mud-flaps fitted the full width of the trailer in belief this causes turbulence in the negative pressure generated at the rear of the trailer and actually reduces the effect of drag. I really don't know if fitting a mud-flap several inches behind a wheel (that in itself causes drag) increases the drag further, or helps to reduce it by causing turbulence... need a lot of science and a wind tunnel to answer that question!

However for me it's more a matter of cost... don't think that even if I did save a few cents on fuel by having mud flaps fitted that it would outweigh the drop in value on a vehicle covered by stone chips - plus it's also a bit of consideration for drivers behind me (mud flaps also helps stop stones being thrown onto other cars)

you have a point there don, cheaper and easier than useing a wind tunnel is to take the truck or car to Lake Gairner SA speed test it with and without.

in the guide it says you cannot place them on a body kit but its talking about the full body kit.
the SR only comes with side skirts so i assume the rear mud flaps at least can go on, but i the fronts can not?

can anyone confirm this for me please?

also are there any cheaper places to buy - my local doesn't have any for ages and they're over $60 per pair

You'll want to check if they will sell rears only though, you are right about the side skirts stopping fronts being fitted.

Yep you can fit them to the rear of an SR, Crystal has them - the fronts just don't fit around the skirts. I bought a pair of fronts with the intention of modifying them to fit with the heat gun and other implements of destruction, but... let's just say that didn't go well...

There's another SR in my area I saw that has genuine ones on the back and he's installed a nice set of universal ones on the front - it looks pretty good, but not ideal because they don't match the moulded ones on the rear. The paint on the skirts isn't too crash hot and on Crystal it's suffered a bit, but at least being white it's easy to touch up. I might yet copy the other local SR and put some universals on the front. Or skip the skirts altogether on the new car.

i'm a bit iffy on universal ones. with the fronts not being on and the paint getting damaged is it only the skirt getting damaged? as to me that isn't a big deal. but i would like them on the back. i'm sorta surprised that noone has made any to fit around the body kit.

unfortunately it is the set so not really financially conducive for me - unless i plan to sell the fronts. but i couldn't be bothered.

Only the leading edge of the skirt was getting damaged on Crystal - but she's done 36000km on country roads and a good clean, polish and touch up had her looking good. Like I say the paint on the skirts isn't as good as it is on the rest of the car (in oz they're painted and fitted after the car arrives in the country).

The only other problem with not having them on the front is that rocks and gravel get flung up and can pit the rear wheels. Like I say, Crystal's done her share of country road work but the rear wheels were just starting to get a bit pitted on the spokes from flying stones. Not in a bad way, but I noticed it as I scrubbed them with a toothbrush...  It certainly isn't visible unless you look hard.

I must say I thought about fitting universal ones when I got Crystal and found some nice looking ones (i.e. not like the ones you normally see on trailers...  but I still never did it.

I reckon if you look really hard at other cars you'd probably find some from another manufacturer that could be made to fit with a bit of effort. Unfortunately the standard fronts are just too different to the profile of the skirt to be made to fit. I certainly gave it my best shot.

looks like i should be ok. i never bothered with mud flaps for the festiva and my overall tyre wear and paint damage was pretty good (stone chips was by far a  worse issue). and i'm not hugely concerned if its only the skirt getting getting damaged as you say as i feel that is an easier part to touch up or even take the whole part off and get it resprayed if it came to that.

No I'm very protective of her and never took her on dirt/bitumen roads. The most gravelly roads she went on were roads that had just been resealed and had some fresh gravel laid across them. Probably 60% on a-grade and the rest on anything down to d-grade...

You're right about the skirt, it's not the end of the world in the scheme of things.

I would still fit rears though, it visually lowers the look of the car IMHO.
