At 5 o’clock this evening I strolled all nonchalant like into my local dealer, sat down at the salesman’s desk, leant forward and whispered gently to him “where is my car, BITCH”.
Of course the salesman is a friend of mine so it wasn’t a problem.
I handed over 10 grand and he gave me the keys to my new car!!!!

I haven’t got it up to 6th gear yet so can not comment.

In the 12 miles I did till I got it home its showing 61.9 mpg, things are looking up!

Cool.

Would you mind checking the service book and see if the service interval has been increased to 20,000 miles/2 years or is it still 12,000 miles/1 year?

How's that redesigned box for gear changes, is it positive, and smooth?

Thanks.

Here's my thoughts:

Signature?  Specs? On second thoughts, no... I might get depressed !

12 miles to get it home?
So I am guessing (if it were me anyway) you live a mile or so from the dealer, and drove around, and around, for a while???

In answer:-

The box is positive yet smooth.
I live 7 miles from the dealer and i did a little detour.
The service interval is 1 year 12500 miles.

Which brings me on to a question - I have seen mentioned a 1000 mile first service but its not in my book?

"Not needed for the UK i30 CRDi model"

That's what I was told when I enquired in March 2008. The engine simply does not need looking at before the first 12,500 mile interval. Historically I always took my new cars in for "bolt tightening" (etc) but my supplier said this was not essential, as the manufacturer does not deem it necessary.

You can quote me on that.

12,500m
25,000m
37,500m (<--- that's my next service)

The U2 engine is supposedly spec'd to 20K Miles/2 years interval according to hyundai specs - shame they didn't apply it to the car. Servicing revenue to generate I guess.

My OH's 1.6 Diesel Pug 207 is 20K/2 years.

just a heads up..

we have run a whole series of engine oil tests with my i30 since new. full oil analysis every 2500km and changed every 7500km. our tests indicate significant wear metal accumulation in the oil over the first 5000km, then lessening after that to a more stable rate of accumulation from 7500km. by 15000km, wear rate has become negligible.

my strong advice to you would be to change the oil and filter at 7500km or there about (midway through the first service interval). after that, it is less important, however your engine will definitely benefit from an early oil change at the beginning of its life.

(same goes for your gearbox too, although less so these days)

i would be very skeptical about suggestions that engines do not need touching early on. indeed, they will not die if left alone, but you can do your's a big favour by doing changing midway through the first interval. a 20k mile (32k km odd) 2 year wait from new is a no brainer - do not do it. our oil testing demonstrates that this would be seriously suboptimal.

Even if they had said it was 20K/2 years I would still change it early, but it would have meant just an oil change not a full "service" to keep up the warranty. In my experience main dealer "services" are a rip-off.

The U2 introduces a completely redesigned oil-filter and instantaneous ultrasonic oil-level detector.

I have been a mechanic all my life and i agree with the early oil change.
All my cars have always had a 5000 mile service routine
My Volvo which went in on the scrapage scheme had 115000 miles on the clock and at service the oil was still clean when changed.
I do benefit from trade prices so an oil and filter change with 5w40 fully synthetic oil only cost £22 which meant it was stupid not to do it.
I will be doing the same with my SHINY NEW I30!!!

Congratulations! Great news! I think you're the first 6-speed 1.6 CRDI owner here  Tell us how it drives, how much rpm it has at 100, 120, 130 kph etc.. After it has some miles on it

I would also change oil and oil filter at 7,500.. I've changed mine when it had 10,000 kms, didn't manage to do it earlier. We've been doing that with all of our cars so far and nothing bad came out of it..

Now..go drive it around

I'm pretty certain it's the best selling car in the uk at the moment. It's very small though. If you trade and old banger (more than 10 years old) in against a new one you only have to pay about £5K for it.
