Cheap tyre pressure monitors putting drivers in danger, say campaigners, as carmakers use inferior systems to save €10

Study finds the cheaper systems don't properly identify low pressure

T&E said they may be calibrated by carmakers to pass official tests

Indirect systems work by comparing pressure at all four tyres instead of measuring the actual pressure level at each one independently

Direct systems measure pressure at the tyre itself Motoring group said indirect systems should be abolished

Is this something we actually need or is it tech gone crazy?

Why have we not progressed these instead?

Because the cops wouldn't be able to use their stop-sticks / stingers.

That article would be more relevant to its headline if it published a list of what type is fitted to the various models.

My car seems to have a sensor in each tyre valve - but whether this is classed as direct or indirect I have no idea.

A friend has a BMW series 1 and he is under the impression that it senses differential wheel rotation to trigger a loss of pressure using the ABS sensors - is this what they call indirect?

I've ordered a set of TPMS for my car. They are coming from Ebay via Hong Kong and only cost around $78 with my 10% birthday discount. I'll review them when they arrive.

I just check my tyres occasionally.

Seriously, I can turn my headlights/windscreenwipers/car on and off myself, I can also check my tyres.

Sure these knick knacks might have some use for some people, but cut the gizmos and just make the car cheaper.

TPMS became manditory on all new cars sold Nov 2014 and later, only just. So I'm safe :victory:

Although its not mandatory to keep TPMS in working order in Sweden.

I need a new presure meter, I found out mine is very inaccurate when putting the winters on. Studded tires with low pressure make a horrible sound. That said, I check the presure once a month together with a bunch of other stuff like bulbs and fluid levels. TPMS is probably of most use to those who don't drive a lot, and in countries where you don't have to switch tyres two times a year(as most people will make sure pressure is good when they make the change atleast).
