A Merseyside PC who smashed into a teenage suspect after following a speeding stolen car was cleared of careless driving.
A court heard Laura Jameson, a Merseyside Police officer of nine years, drove an unmarked police van “competently” but was let down by a “loss of traction” as she tried to keep the speeding driver in sight.
District Judge Andrew Shaw found the 33-year-old mum-of-two, not guilty after a short trial at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court today.
The Crown Prosecution Service argued that PC Jameson was either driving too quickly or failed to apply her brakes effectively enough to prevent the collision, on January 5 this year, although they made it clear it was not arguing that she deliberately struck Mr Wilkinson.
However an onboard computer in the van recorded her speed as 42mph when she applied the brakes, 32 metres from the junction, which an independent collision expert described as “appropriate” for her duties and said would have given her enough time to stop.
Her colleague in the van, PC Golbourne, told investigators the van went over a speed hump on Buckingham road and suddenly “went light,” which Judge Shaw said “clearly showed a loss of traction”.
