Wheels magazine is my favoured go-to resource for reviews. You may want to have a look at the latest issue which has a small car mega test.

Final positions are:

1. Golf
2. Astra
3. Peugeot 308
4. Subaru impreza
5. Mazda 3
6. Ford Focus
7. Honda Civic
8. Skoda octavia
9. Renault Megane
10. Toyota Corolla
11. Hyundai Elantra
12. Kia cerato

I will have to check out that test (I can download the Wheels magazine for free from my local library)

I don't reckon they were looking at the top models of each as the SR Elantra would have rated much higher than 2nd last!

I am very familiar with the current Corolla (prefer the Sedan to the Hatch) but both very bland to drive compared to the Hyundai.

I sussed out a new Impreza sedan yesterday. They are quite a nice looking car and quite a step up on the old model. They have a limited offer of 2 years extra warranty I believe and 3 years 75K fixed price servicing (but I couldn't find out how much - usually quite dear even when capped)

Because you keep your cars a long time I think the Subby would work our dearer to maintain in the long run.

Resale on Subbies is usually better than Hyundai but if you keep them say 10 years the difference will be negligible.

Then there's this............

@pidim You make some valid points. I don't take Aussie motoring magazines very seriously any more since they stopped doing comprehensive tests (many years ago) They used to test all sorts of things like braking distances etc... Now it's just subjective opinions which often vary depending on who is doing the review (see some of the He said/She said reviews...

I've had many "cars of the year" over the years and several (Holden Camira)  :whistler: didn't end up living up to the hype..

Hi,
Does not matter what you get, someone will bag it, it's the same for bikes, boats, vans, even bloody TV's.  :crazy1:
Once you both decide on what you favour, let us know.
It's a real PITA - maybe that's why it's usually 10 years between new ones for us

I heard that (a good move)

I'm quite partial to the Skoda Octavia RS but probably a bit dearer than the Elantra.

Just checked (approx 7K or more dearer)

So today we did back-to-back drives of the Elantra Elite and Elantra SR, both autos.
Not much in it, from where I was in the passenger seat. Comments?

She drove. She certainly didn't gun either car for me to tell the difference as autos. She did say she thought the SR was more responsive, being the 1.6 turbo with dual clutch 7 sp auto.

I think she's more concerned with whizz bang gizmo features now. Even the different front and rear end styling differences didn't seem to be enough to convince her. The priority for (near) leather seats was satisfied with both Elite and SR.

The only conclusive outcome is that she likes how smooth and quiet they both are. :Dunno:

Without doing any research on the price difference,  if there is only a couple of thousand in it I would take the turbo model rather than regreting it later. Although, double check the service intervals because I know you are tight like me with running costs and I think the turbo is 6 months and 10k intervals and the non turbo is 15k and 12 months?

Yes, the turbo model has the dual clutch auto which gets done 6m / 7500km v 12m / 15000 km. The price difference is likely to be about $5K

If she isnt much fussed, I would go with the Elite. I would suggest that you will get a better deal with the elite, as it is not wizz bang new.  Though I have a feeing that the SR might attract more money at resale, It would depend how long you intend to keep the car as to how much that might be.

She kept her last car for 20 years and only sold it because it wasn't worth storing whilst we were overseas.

That's probably another reason to go the non turbo, turbo engine might be more likely to need expensive repairs when it gets older and out of warranty...

I toe tally agree.
But at the end of the day, it's Mrs Gonz who needs to be happy.
