I noticed his right arm and forefinger flexing as he pushes down on the table

In fact, after a second watch, his whole body is swaying. What a swizz  :head_butt:

I was going to say well picked up, but maybe I should say well pushed down.

Look closely at the table against the wallpaper - you can see it does not move.

That is not the answer. :snigger:

Do you notice that the unit swings to the opposite side before the balls change direction.

Either the momentum creates the change or is the round piece of wood on the base, which appears to be in the middle, slightly off centre so creating movement.

The floor moves , the tabke moves and he is using his fingers and hands to stop himself from swaying.

When I was at university 2 clever colleague students in the Physics class built a similar but not identical machine - filmed it - and showed it to the physics lecturer who was highly amused.

It wasn't the first time he had clever buggers try and baffle him. He suggested that they should show it to the students at the next lecture to see how many would fall for it. Many did.

According to the lads - who had spent several hours setting it up - he guessed straight away how they had done it. Digital cameras and YouTube didn't exist 60 years ago so they used an 8mm home movie camera to film it - hence it was not widely distributed.

The lecturer used it as a reminder to us students that the first law of thermodynamics, also known as the Law of Conservation of Energy, states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed; energy can only be transferred or changed from one form to another. For example, turning on a light would seem to produce energy; however, it is electrical energy from an external source that is being converted to light and heat.

The lads then revealed that the illusion was created thus :-

The table was supported by a platform (an old door) hinged like a see saw. The wall at the back and the camera tripod were attached to the platform so that the picture looked perfectly steady. It wasn't - one of the lads was out of the picture tilting the see saw platform up and down to reverse the direction of the balls at each "stroke"

I imagine that is what is happening in the YouTube video - the guy is putting his finger tips on the table to hold himself steady against the background. Hence his slight body movement.

I wish you'd said all this earlier, before I'd forwarded the video to the JPL at NASA :snigger:

Notice how the board doesn't fall to one side as he places it on the table, almost as if two repelling forces were being applied from under the table. And why does the underside use two differing screw holes sizes, almost as if the outer holes needed more metal for some reason.

The supporting strut geometry is just to fool you - it is a rigid structure and not hinged. Hence, it acts the same as a solid unmoving support.
