It's in a relatively safe location but filling it with oil seems to make sense.

n cap 5 is the safety rating only for impact safety on passangers,if you look at nearly all small and medium cars the fuel tank is mounted in the middle of the car and its plastic.if you crash and the tank explodes i don't think you could survive the crash anyway.its very rare a modern day cars fuel tank explodes as its plastic, and it wont spark if crushed.because its mounted centrally if you crashed bad enough to split it, i think your dead anyway, even without fire or explosion the car would be badly crushed, and the occupants inside also.

I've not been underneath to look, but something I read lead me to believe its a steel tank on the i30.

I don't think the thought of the fuel tank being anything other than steel even occured to me.

would have to check what the tank is made of. but most aussie made cars have plastic tanks, they expand a bit if you fill them right up with petrol.
this car in accident was upside down, so not sure if tank ruptued or if fuel was able to leak out upside down. but i think all new cars it's not possible for fuel to leak out at any angle.
i know with Motorcycles it is not possible now but at one stage 20 years back it happened, they improved them a lot. i put my Harley down at 190kph on a race track and it slid upside down for about 200meters sparks everywhere but no fire, i registered 160kph on my butt with full leathers on got straight up walked away.
