This video popped up in my YouTube feed. it explores the wear (or lack of) in the motor of a Diesel Skoda Octavia with over 400,000 Miles on the clock. I'm sure @Lakes @nzenigma @tw2005 @Doggie 1 and many other diesel fans will find it interesting to watch.

Not a bad vid though without mention of exactly how often it was serviced and with what oils used I’m left with little information.

Yes first part he shows, deposits as you could expect at say 100K Km on if not  previously cleaned

Thanks Dazz,  :goodjob2:
That's what you used to expect from a diesel motor in the good old days. Its done 700,000Km.
The mechanic has made a reasonable assumption that it has been regularly serviced and good oils etc have been used.
It probably reinforces my advice when buying a used car, the visual evidence is far more reliable than logbook and owner's anecdotal evidence.

Obviously, Skoda/VW used good case hardening given the condition of the cam shaft. That was a failing in the early Subaru.
He notes hone marks still evident in the bore. I was impressed when we used to strip early Datsun motors, still had hone marks in the bore, vs. Toyotas that had softer steel and well worn bores.

All interesting stuff Gary. I've never tackled anything motor related in my cars (even my early higher mileage ones) but I do find that sort of stuff interesting. I was bought up around garage workshops with my Dad and later my stepdad.

This was a good watch.  One of the best car-related channels I've come across on YouTube.
