Howdy all

I'm biting the bullet and looking for a new car to cover impending arrival no 1.

Ouch.  

Anyway, the math is telling me that a new i30 supercedes a 5yr old car with 100k on the clock (ie Subaru Outback), especially given the safety options kicked in as standard, plus the 5 year warranty.

So, I'm looking at the wagon - SX probably. the 2010 model comes with a full suite of airbags to kick it straight into 5 star safety rating territory, but it has added $1k to the price of the 2010 model.

Also looking at adding cruise control + fog light ($400?), and a metallic paint ($320).

I'm undecided on whether to fork out the extra $2500 for a 1.6l diesel - I worked out that based on a 6 cent price differential in fuel, I'd save $20 tank and after 125 full tanks and 83,000km, I'd start saving money, without any adjustment for different servicing costs (I think diesel costs more).

Current driving patterns are around 10,000-15,000km per year, with little requirement for rural driving.

I'm gonna have to get down to the tin tacks of negotiations soon. The dealer conveniently made a passing reference to Hyundai not offering discounts but later said they had been told they will sell cars between xmas and new year.

Has anyone got any realistic idea of what I can persuade him to throw in?

Eg a second key (someone mentioned in another thread that you get one key, number 2 key costs $400 or so).

Door mats were mentioned also as a throw in.

What have others managed to negotiate at crunch time - a price discount (how much?) or throw ins (what exactly?), or both?


For me, the important thing is a full air bag suite. This has to be done at the factory so there is limited option for me to chase a run out 2009 model when this isn't standard on the SX.

Any tips and tricks would be appreciated!

Here in UK the dealers expect you to barter as it seems to be a trade secret that everybody knows that they have between 5 -10% to play with.

Work out what you would like to pay and just see what they are offering.  If it meets your expectation go for it.  If not, walk away and try another dealer.

If they are adamant that they will not drop further on the new car, they might up the PX price to compensate.

It's the bottom line figure you are interested in.

Don't forget to ask for extras AFTER they are at bottom line figure.  Hesitate and see how many extras you can get.

Try it. Nothing to loose.  But you might be surprised at what they will eventually drop to.

I told the dealer i was paying no more than 8.5k and he met me at 8.6k. A grand off the list price and i got 2 keys and floor mats 

You have the 'top card' and as such should call the shots

Keep in mind the diesel is not just about economy, it has more torque than a black hole, and has a strange ability to fold space

I'm guessing from your "Cruise Option" price you are in Australia.
Two full keys are standard (although I'd ask the question to be sure).
Re petrol or diesel IMHO it all depends on how much you enjoy driving.
If you do, go the petrol and manual. You can really get stuck into it without doing nasty things to your fuel economy.
Agree with others it's the changeover price that's important. Whatever figure they give you, there'll be room to move.

I guess I'd like to know what margins the sales guys are working within - I don't want the salesperson to make nothing out of me, just get a win-win outcome!

Optional extras I'm currently considering are window tinting (Hyundai quote is $495), a cargo barrier, floor mats, headlight & bonnet protector, stylevisor (do they block much sun?), towbar, trailer wiring harness and roof racks. No doubt that'll be an extra $2k....

Any feedback on these accessories from those who have bought them for their own car, would be great.

I'm another who reckons the Diesel is worth the extra for the effortless cruising and hill climbing ability and remember you will probably recoup more than half the extra when you next swap vehicles. There are plenty of threads on here about window tinting (go direct to the window tinters and you should save around $200 on the dealer price) I'd skip the headlight protectors, Bonnet protector AKA leaf catcher and the Style Visors but The floor mats are great...

Its a pity with the wagon if you choose SLX you are stuck with the Auto trans.  I've driven both petrol and diesel and I chose the diesel, and have never looked back!  But most of my driving is rural.  If you are mainly in traffic then the diesel will use a lot less fuel, but like you say it will take a long time to recover the costs.  Take them both for a long test drive in the sorts of conditions you will be mainly in.  Dont be afraid to take it for an hour or so each, oh and dont worry about the saleman not making any money!  If the deal gets anywhere near break even he'll bail out way before that!  There is no such thing as an honest car salesman!  If you are in WA I can recommend John Hughes they are the best of the worst - a bit like voting for a politician!

I have had window tinting done by a guy who did my wife's Corolla over 2 years ago, so I know he's OK.
$285 for the best option, using darkest legal tint (and another $15 for a windscreen strip.) You can get down to about $200 but I wouldn't recommend it.
The film and its fitment carries a national warranty.

They should have crossbars for the rails which come on the CW.
I have a hatch and the racks fit straight into the factory provided slots.
They were $305 but I managed $285.

Do what I did, go to the website www.discountnewcars.com.au ..... they offer the cheapest driveaway priced discounts without  negotiating ..... I then negotiated with another dealer for a discount and options and they had a look at what was on offer from the website.

the stylevisors (the side ones you're talking about?) - no they don't block the sun in my opinion.
i got them but more so to block some wind if i want to air car out or let out built up heat. the car lets in a LOT of heat and i'd recommend tinting first over the visors, then a dashmat.
in my experience, i was not allowed to get a tint strip on the front windscreen for legal reasons and you may find this also. the steepness of the screen does let in the heat and the dash just absorbs it. so you will need a dashmat. my tinting - hyundai just told me where they get it done, and told me to do it privately, cost me half the price. i'd suggest you do similar.

haggle like crazy! if the dealer you're seeing is stubborn, then see another. it should be a great time to buy. buy 2009 stock if it means saving a heap. also with the extras you should be able to get some thrown in for free, and the rest you should be able to negotiate a better asking price. i got floor mats and ipod cable and wheel locks free and headlight protectors and dash mat and style visors cheaper than RRP. don't go for the extras straight away though, haggle the price first then as its starts to slow introduce extras in. well that would be my way to do i guess.

Floor and dash mat I got for free as part of my deal and depending on the dealership you can get style visors for $60, they don't block the sun.
Also if you go to Solar Tint you can get darkest legal tint for $220.. Just shop around.

my wife's visors are tinted ,not clear, and hers help with the sun.   and as far as buying an i30,i have one of each,a hatch and a cw.both are great cars.I'm very impressed with the cars.

I bought my MY09 i30 SLX CRDi manual through Private Fleet.  I ordered it in November 2008 and took delivery in late January 2009.  It came with two keys.  I got the Ultra Tint window tint included, although if I had lived in the city I could have got it done about $200 cheaper at Tint-a-Car.  I also got the rear spoiler at the time I ordered the car - it was about $100 cheaper through Private Fleet than what the dealership originally wanted to charge.  I wouldn't recommend the genuine dash mat - it leaves most of the dashboard exposed on the passenger side also the little pop-up cubby hole in the middle of the dash.  You can get an after market Sunland dash mat from Auto 1 for about $50 - the Hyundai one was $120.  It would be worth your while to make an enquiry to Private Fleet to see what they can do for you and compare their price to the dealer's price. My car, including on-road costs, metallic paint, rear spoiler, dash mat, floor mats, window tint, full tank of fuel and delivery to my home 1200km north of Perth was around $2000 cheaper than what the dealer wanted.  Silly thing is, the dealer that provided the car was the same dealer that we got a price from in the first place.

Yours sounds right and it's the next thing on my list.
Re windscreen tinting, you are legally allowed up to 10% coverage in Qld - provided it doesn't interfere with forward vision, which is not a problem because the Hyundai screen is so large.
Most of the "chain" tinters will tell you it's generally acceptable to go across in line whith the spotted tinting in front of the rear vision mirror, which is what I've done on mine. I'm 6'2" and still have good upwards vision even with the seat right back.

mmmm depends on who you talk to i guess. the guy who did my tinting was the guy who does all the hyundai vehicles for local area. he wouldn't touch it, he said he could be fined if he did. he said the calculation is actually worked on how much clearance is left above the arch of the windscreen wipers. now i know about the 10% so my understanding is that is must be which ever is less? as what was left above the arch was so minimal it wasn't worth doing - he just wouldn't do it. i know a couple others here (e.g sweetbix) has had it done, there is another thread about it somewhere where we discussed it before, so it can be done, but some tinters won't do it legally.

I've got a pic of the Hyundai dash mat that I had on my car, but its on my computer at home.  I'll be back there on Thursday so will see if I can find the pic and post it.  I do think the one that snowcherry has given the link for looks much better.  I ended up giving the Hyundai dash mat to a friend of ours.

Got a vivid blue i30CW 2.0l petrol wagon. Managed to get window tinting (max UV protection), tow bar and wiring, rear luggage barrier, dash mat and universal rubber floor mats (4) added plus 3 mths rego for the sum total of $27,500. Hopefully I drove a good bargain - I think I did OK.
