We bought a Dyson V6 vac in April 2017 which Libby loves using because it is easy to use, is light and free of the cord that the previous upright cleaner had.

I like it because I no longer have to hump the previous heavy cleaner up and down the stairs for her

However, the cleaner has recently got grumpy. Sometimes, after charging, it will happily run for 10 to 15 minutes. Other times, it dies after only a minute or two. It's totally inconsistent.

It is still under warranty (24 months) and I called Dyson support for help.  The lady asked me  to take the cleaner out of its charger - look at the top and tell her whether the blue light surrounding the MAX button was on when I pulled the trigger.

It was.

She asked if any user in the house ever altered the setting - I had to admit we left it on maximum

She then explained that this meant that the vac had been constantly used in boost mode - rather than in the normal mode - which reduces the life of the battery (this being the life of the battery in years - not how long the charge lasts). She said that you should only use boost (MAX) to suck up stubborn stuff like animal fur or cotton threads etc. (I cannot recall seeing this mentioned in the owners instruction leaflet - but us blokes don't read instructions anyway)

However, because the cleaner is still within the warranty period, she said they would send me a replacement battery pack (normally costing £65 plus postage) FOC which will arrive by courier within 5 days.

So any members with a V4, V6 or V8 cleaner need to make a note. Only use the MAX setting when really necessary.

Hi Alan , thank you for that useful info, people in unit next to me told me thats what they use. So I will let them know.
I have learnt a bit about how using more aggressive settings, with my Coclear bionic ear's shortens the re chargeable battery's life. I found this out from a friend that has had two, for the past 10 years. And he is a test pilot for the scientists. he loves that & helping other's. so when I saw my audiologist that does my maps, I got my map less aggressive , by saying that is very loud  slightly before it was too loud. surprised how much longer from a full charge. my friend said his battery's last much longer than average.
Also my electric mountain bike uses that type of battery. And has  software that hooks up to mobile phone, that gives you a lot of battery health info. also tell's you expected life of battery via amount of charges left. so I also set that less aggressive and use mostly economy.
this will be something full electric car owners will need to learn about too.

back to vacuum . I have a Dyson upright plug in, has served me well. but noticed since having my cat, I need to vacuum hair up off different surfaces. the Dyson does it but not very well from sheets. I was in Better Electric just after Xmas New Year, had some specials, they had Dyson amount others. I asked chap what was a good pet hair vacuum . he said Electrolux with a special head with its own motor. so I got one , has a cord but unit is light & cord self retractable. the catcher smaller than my Dyson but everything easy to work with, turn power down to 2 & it will remove all animal hair from sheets without sucking sheet in. am very happy.
I have two level cave so have stairs.

You have to be careful!

It's easy to get sucked in to buying too many vacuum cleaners..

We had two battery replacements on our previous v6 Dyson including a switch/trigger replacement and eventually got a full refund out of warranty period due to constant problems, upgraded to current v10 hoping it would be better than the earlier models and already had the battery replaced after 4 months :disapp:

Don't worry at least it will probably use less power than a V8 or a V12...
