Heya team,

I know that a few of us have had issues with the flickering middle panel in the FD i30 in the past, but my problem is that plus a step further... The other night, I was driving along and I started getting the flickering, then about 5 seconds later, all my interior backlighting (instrument cluster, aircon controls) went black. My headlights, cruise control indicator, and stereo stayed lit as per normal. As far as I could tell, my rear lights were all fine as well.

I remedied the problem with a gentle tap on top of the dash, but obviously I'd rather it not happen at all again...

Any ideas or tips?

I have a 2010 i30cw SX 2.0L petrol, 4sp auto

well there was rumour that there may be a tech bulletin the dealers have that may suggest replacing these clusters, Interesting yours is 2010, I've had two clusters do this both 2010, yet my two 08 i30 have had no issues.

Failing that unless you're a tech wizard and fully dismantle it and surface solder LEDs I think if it fails make enquiries to an out of wty replacement just in case it's a known batch issue and they have something in place like the brake switches which they will replace free regardless of age.

I suspect it's bad LEDs because mine flickered then eventually went dim on the centre display. I put up some really good images of my repair, not sure if you've seen that post yet

Or find a used one with same part number but you may end up with same issue and wrong odometer which could be corrected by either swapping the eepom from the old cluster of finding someone who can alter the data to achieve the same

If a new one goes in, I doubt the dealer will be odometer correcting

Please can you post a link to your repair. I have a dim odometer and trip computer in my 2009 1.6 Crdi  but I have acquired a second hand instrument panel which I hope had some good LED's I can swap. If they are all good couldn't I just put the new panel in.? Isn't'the mileage fed from the ECU? What wiring should I check before any dismantling?

No it's not. It's stored in the cluster. Is the 2nd hand unit identical part number as your original? If so, if you have the ability to solder LEDs then you have the ability to desolder the EEPROM chips and swap them around. Far easier than a full dismantle and will retain the accuracy integrity, otherwise you'll be levering needles off and trying to get them back on th e spindles in the same postion. Easier said than done .

All you'll see in my post is the board out and the bad leds and what I used to fix them.

If you used search, advanced, "flicker" and my user user name you would have found it in a short list of threads

Good luck :goodjob2:

there's only one 8 pin sop chip as far as i know. Google 93c66 and have a look.  Roughly in middle of the back of the board.  Remove the black cover and ha.have a look.  Think I've posted that one too. Trick will be removal  only you know what your skill level is.
