Who knows of a great dash cam that is brilliant at night time and show up licence plates on an angle with lights on it  and it is not bothered by the reflective material of the plates which will cancel out the plate number....

I can show you a photo of what I mean but I have forgotten how to load a photo from my desktop :undecided:

so when I zoom in , its a no goer

Hi John,

Was hoping to get over there for Dad's 98th on 19th July, but don't think it's going to happen. I need to get a decent dash cam too.. so be interesting to see what the latest feedback is from Craig and others. Although I always want champagne quality for beer prices.

To add a photo just click on the "click here to add photo" link straight under the reply box then follow the directions.

Although I think we get the drift of what you mean without a photo.

Hope your other half is back running on all cylinders. Take care mate and stay out of Victoria.  :cool:

Hi, just purchased a Viofo 129 dual cam kit for my i30 & Berlingo van - plus son also got one for his new Tiguan.
They also have a 119 single cam kit.
Had kits installed hardwired by a chap who fits them as a side job (10/week @ $140 - not a bad sidejob!!)

He mentioned that the Viofo was probably the best @ lower end of market & Blackview for top end.
Plenty of sample vids on Youtube & dascam review sites to give you some idea of quality.

Can pull our cam out & get some clips if you need more.
Bought from this eBay seller

PS Also prev had a Mini 0805 but it started playing up after a few years

Just Fitted my Street Guardian SG9665GC after changing vehicles. The camera is now 6 years old and and is still working great . Shows great  video day and night. Cant say I have noticed the reflection on night time number plates.The later cameras still have good reviews. They also make a 2 channel one that allows you to have the reverse camera as well. Street Guardian has a special section on Dash Cam Talk Forum. The after sales service is the best you will find. There is a good thread on Dash Cam Talk forum regarding reading number plates at night .  https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/reading-license-plates-at-night-light-reflection-overexposure-hid-xenon-standard-bulbs.1444/    Hopefully this link will work.

Cheers John.

Street Guardian are great and have the best after sales service in Australia.
BlackVue 750 is another great cam which Is more discrete and has better night time footage than the 4K 900s, the 900s is unmatched for daytime quality.

Hi Craig..... it seems most cameras have pretty good daytime viewing, It seems that because of what night time brings in the color department, you would think having a great nite time viewing would be the way to go

@neptune

Good to hear about your other half. It amazes me how much crap our essential workers have to put up with.  :crazy1: :fum:

@i30premy

Hi Neville, they aren't a bad price and i'm sure they would be a lot better than the Navig8er cheapie I used in the SR (still haven't put it in the Hybrid!

@John B

Thanks for the link (works a treat) you do a good job for a teenage geriatric (having a lend of you about your new guitar interest) :snigger:

Don't get me wrong, the 4K 900s is still good at night but it's just those really dark country roads where it falls short a little compared to the sensor used in the 750 or top end Street Guardians.

John, The Blackvue 900s is the perfect choice for my needs though I could probably have been just as happy with the 750, I wanted a discrete as possible with the best daytime footage possible, my night driving is generally suburbia and freeway which is usually well lit so night footage is still good.

Wi-Fi capability was another feature I wanted so can watch directly on my phone and download files to phone without needing to remove the memory card.

It really depends on your specific needs, if you want a good quality discrete cam with very good all round footage without costing a fortune the Blackvue 750, the 900s at a premium is better on daytime footage though the night footage if travelling country roads as mentioned will fall short compared to the 750.

Street Guardian and Viofo are similar design though not as discrete in the wedge form with viewing screens, both are about the same video quality which is very good, the Street guardian maybe just slightly better by a smidgen and superior after sales support (second to none).

I've no experience with Go Pro's so cant comment there sorry.

Did not realise the article was that old. I would say things have improved a lot since then, as you say LEDS are used a lot now. Hope you find what you want.  I know Craig did heaps of research on Dash Cams and I value his thoughts. :goodjob2:

@neptune Some areas where the GoPro would be lacking is no Parking mode feature, no impact (G Force) event recording, and I don’t believe the GoPro puts the recorded video into segmented 3 or 5 minute time an date files...it would likely be one continuous recording.
