Hi i30 buddies,
I listened to you lot and took the plunge. I love my i30 it's only 5.8 hrs old but they've delivered my beautiful new slx with a tow bar and ball. Only the ball covers the number plate so no good. I actually asked for a tow bar that had a pin so I could easily remove the ball apparatus without having to use a shifting spanner. Does anyone out there have an i30 with a tow bar that has a pin? they claim that kind of tow bar doesn't exist for an i30. If you have one that does please send me the details.

I have seen two types that have removable tongues. Haymen Reese I believe is one and has its traditional square section interface and the one I have which has a pin and nut arrrangement which incidently is quite hard to remove.

The one I got was dealer supplied but as far as I can tell is not genuine. Perhaps the one you got is. If it obscures the plate then it's hopeless and even if it doesn't I'm pretty sure most states have a law preventing a towbar remaining fitted without towing something.

Thanks Pip I'll look into that one you mentioned. Perhaps, maybe the pin is as hard as a shifting spanner.

The pin is probably better called a bolt and is retained by a large plastic nut with radial slots on its periphery that needs a screwdriver or similar to push around. The problem is that there is very little room to assemble the whole thing and get the nut started on the thread. My fingers are raw by the time I get it done so I have to admit to leaving it on the car. The nut is secured when done up by a clip which I lost. :'(

If you do a search around here you should come up with a few pictures.

Hi considering,

I'm pretty sure the Hayman Reese one comes with a square hitch arrangement which can be removed pretty easily when not in use. They're also good because you won't kneecap yourself every time you walk around the back of your car.

If they've fitted a genuine Hyundai one I'm surprised it obscures the plate - I've not noticed that as a fault with the genuine kit...

Certainly worth pursuing if it really does obscure the plate. Depending on what state you are in there are laws about that sort of thing and if it isn't a roadworthy/ADR fitment it's up to the dealer to sort it out.

Congrats on your purchase by the way - perhaps you should change your name to "decided"

Firstly. sorry how dirty my car is (i'm waiting for a decent break in our foul weather to clean it up) there is a lot of building work going on in my area and trucks are leaving muddy residue on the road  :-[

Here are 3 pix of my Hyundai Genuine ? Tow bar (I got it thrown in with the deal.. think it is normally around A$700 and similar to Pips.

It does obscure my number plate slightly but haven't been picked up by the police in over 2 years and 65,000kms. Also note the inexpensive shin protector which only cost a couple of $$ from Supercheap I think... :D

I had a very similar one to that on my wife's Pulsar Q. It came with it. I just removed the towball so the number plate was visible. Took about 30 secs with a shifter.

Having said that I had a Hayman Reese one on my Liberty. It was great.

Thanks for the info guys and for the pics Dazzler.  The car yard reckon they are going to replace it with a genuine removable hyundai tow bar so I gather that will be one just like yours. It's heartening to know you haven't been pulled over for it obscuring the plate.

i love my little i30, can't believe i waited so long.

G'day.  I had the original towbar fitted to mine (just like the one in Dazzlers pic, just not as adorned....).  If I remember correctly, this is the towbar rated at 50kg.  After I got rear-ended, the panel beater fitted a Hayman Reece towbar (square section) which sounds like the one you are looking for.  This one is rated at 75kg.  This one is the style that is a square tube held in place with a steel pin - and a lock bolt underneath.

I'm sure there is two types of towbar,I've seen some with a bolt off tongue, and some with the pin style. i think in oz the towbars used are the pin style now and not the earlier bolt off style.  [but i have been wrong before. ]

having just fitted a towbar to mine (non Hyundai)_because the proper Hyundai one was 4 times the price,i can confirm the legitimate bar HAS a removable ball,
mine also obscures the plate, so as i don't use it often Ive bolted the ball on upside down and reverse it when i need to use it.
I could leave it off  but i like the fact people parking hit my towbar rather than my bumper lol

You will have to be careful you don't scrape you ball on the ground entering driveways etc...

There are two types of towbar. The bolt on tongue type is rated to 50kg, whilst the square section pin type towbar is rated to 75kg.
