I had a nice win today. Our Simpson dryer had developed a fault whereby the timer dial would never make it all the way back to stop.

I pulled the dryer apart and removed the timer module, a simple clockwork piece driving cogs that separate relay contacts when the timer is done.

A simple clean, light lube and a few test runs and the dryer is performing as expected. That saved a chunk of money for a replacement.

I also prefer home maintenance to replacement, where possible

That said, not one of our white appliances have mechanical controls as accessible or maintainable as that module - we're stuck with the manufacturers software, which sad to say (particularly for the dampness sensor in our tumble dryer) leaves a lot to be desired.

Therein lies the trick. Our dryer is over 30 years old, seldom used and good as new.

Funny you should say that. That's exactly how it looked after it spent the first few years as an overhead and then was relocated to the garage floor. I then pulled off the panels and reversed them.

Of course, when the timer failed years later, Mrs G sounded very much like she thought my panel inversions had caused the problem!

Always best to have a go, it's already broken so if ya cannot do it then you've lost nowt by having a go

Ours has been used, today, for around 4 hours (2 loads). It's the same 4 or 5 days a week. A constant hit on my bank balance. Good old British weather
