Valve replaced under warranty.  Interestingly, when I went to have the valve replaced the garage advised that they since I originally reported the fault they had replaced valves on another three cars where the cause had been corrosion.  A cheap fix to the problem presumably would be to fix a full-length dust cap covering all of the valve stem. I don't know if such a thing exists however as I've not been able to find anything l online.

I've never had a TPMS system fitted to any of my many cars.. It looks like this Toyota system might not use valve sensors (I think it is about A$300) I will have to investigate it further as the problems you guys are having with valve failures it might be a better alternative...

One thing to note about the supplied silver plastic caps is they have rubber o-rings installed at the end to make a seal, and most after markey caps you can buy dont have this. I have a little vasline on my threads to try to keep them in good knick.

A dab of vaseline sounds like a good idea Lorian.  I think the TPMS system is a good feature if only the valve stems were more robust.  I'm sure I read somewhere that all new cars  in the EU will need to have a TPMS system fitted from 2012.

I also noticed when I got the car back that the HALO system was been activated.  It hadn't worked before and I didn't realise it was a feature of the car until I consulted the manual after noticing that the door was locking and unlocking automatically..  I'm guessing the garage would have done this when they were re-setting the TPMS.

There is mixed feedback on the Halo locking system.. I never got mine activated but I reckon it would be pretty cool (auto lock and unlock..)

Re the HALO, I've developed this party trick when I have new people in the car.
Start off, accellerate up towards 40 kph and just before I get there I take my left hand off the wheel and snap my fingers.
Presto. The doors lock.
