Would anyone like for me to complete this challenge (One that I'm already 2/5ths the way through)

Melbourne to Sydney, then back to Melbourne, all on ONE tank of fuel in a CRDi manual. (Toyota's claim to fame is to advertise the Prius being able to go from Sydney to Melbourne on one tank of fuel. I am prepared to SMASH that claim!)

I have used under 1/4 of a tank to go from Melbourne to Yass, and will be in Sydney next weekend. On the way back, I might as well drive all the way down to Melbourne to see if I can push it that far.

According to www.travelmate.com.au it is 886 km each way. So 1772km all up.

Currently I am sitting on 3.5lt/100km right now. (All the way from Melbourne)

My only issue I will try to stay at or above 100km/h, where I can.

Think I can do it?

Hi THumper,

Pity you didn't have some way of getting it ratified (sealed fuel cap or something)

I'm seeing if it can be done, if it can, then yes, I will go to Hyundai Australia, ask them to note filling the tank, seal it off, have the media there and then do the drive again.

Though at the moment I have the Tuningbox fitted with the proper economy maps running. In all honesty, it feels like the stock settings in the ECU, but with vastly better economy. Still running stock exhaust.

This entire run will be done with the Tuningbox in place. Next run, without it, so a completely bog standard vehicle (Except for the lights, which I believe would not make one ounce of difference to the economy)

If there is a huge difference between the two, I wonder if Hyundai Australia will listen to owners in changing settings to make the vehicles more economical.

Yes, the Tuningbox will give you noticeable improvements in power AND torque, it will also give noticeable improvements in economy too, depending on how you set it up.

I fitted the unit for the economy, NOT the power!

First of all Thumper I wish you all the best with the travels.

As for Prius and mileage and so forth. My Old Nissan Pulsar could nearly have done that trip. Best I ever got from a tank was 863km going from Sale in Victoria to Richmond New South Wales. Prius's (pri-i?) are rubbish, especially on long distance travels they easily suck down as much if not more petrol than my Pulsar, the only place they come into their own are CBD driving (Even then the i30 will give it a run for it's money)  :D

Good luck to you and I hope you get some attention and recognition from it.

Regards

Daniel

Hi Thumper,
Good luck with your endeavor, if anyone can do it than its you. However, I don't believe you can do it. That said, I hope I am wrong. By my calcultions, basing it on the fact that you will squeeze 60 litres of fuel in the tank, you will need to average 3.38L/p100 to achieve the 1772 klms needed. However, I believe that its possible to get 62 litres of diesel in the tank. OK, let me recalculate, that would mean averaging 3.49L/p100. OK...Its going to be close :D
Good luck, my money is still on you running out with lets say...45klms to go.
What do the rest of you think?

You have got all my support behind this challenge! *pulls out cheer leading crew*

I don't know how you all squeeze in 60L in your fuel tanks...i drive my car to near empty then can only fit in about 45L or so..

Either way, Go Thumper!  :P

Good Luck Thumper.
Link, i've had the fuel light come on and only got 54L in filling to the top, (new pump at a BP servo) i got 57L in at same servo with the old pump they had. i've got 57Lt in at a mobil too. it's almost like pulling a beer :D. but as have said filling with caltex Vortex Premium Diesel is much faster and easier as less foaming.

I like the idea. It is refreshing to see someone in the know using performance tools for economy and I'm all for it!

A case of beer from me, even if you only make it to Sydney.

Hi Thumper,

Now this is an exciting Challenge. I am sure the results comparing the runs with and without "The Box" and perhaps the "Improved flow Exhaust" will make for interesting reading.

Making a one tank return trip would be enough to get a lot of folk to sit up and take notice.

I await details of your successes with bated breath.

Well I'll have to put this on hold since my mother borrowed the beast for the last week and a bit (Her car was involved in an accident, whilst parked) she added 0.5lt/100km to the economy from driving it around.

This tank is still going at 1,341km

I'll have a go, bog stock standard Sydney to Melbourne, back to Sydney after the 30,000km service (Which is in 500km time)
