I have just bought a new i30 tourer. It does not have powered lift for the tailgate so I cannot set it at a level that can be reached comfortably unless you are reasonably tall. I am not getting far with the dealer so does anybody know how to fit a strap or preferably change the struts to a shorter length

Without looking at it, I could suggest that a neat black strap be fitted between the ends of each strut that happens to be shorter by the required amount. It you post photos, I could suggest linkage with better accuracy.

Looking online just now, this suggests you can apply the strap at the bases of the top and bottom anchor pins with the struts operating in parallel above them, just check that the straps don't foul the operation when closing.

Another option may be to get struts for an older model confirming the compressed length matches but with a reduced extended length.

My Mum is short, and the dealer screwed a loop of leather or seatbelt into the hand grip hole of a FD, It hung down enough for her to reach. From memory they used the screw and hole in the handle recess, as that was strengthened due to the fact it was a natural pull down point.

If you measure the strut length fully open, not including the connector ends and measure again where you want it to be, I have a magneti marelli chart that gives sizes and you may be able to find a strut replacement, you will also need NM strength written on the strut.
