you can get them regassed/made stronger/new for like $25 a pair... dad had the ones done on moms merc not long ago, the guy made new ones rather than fixing the old ones, and seriously it only cost $25!

i had a good look at my rear struts on my hatch today and noticed the ones you can buy for your engine bay look just like the rear ones.

I've noticed that in the wife's engine bay [while messing around in the fuse/relay box] if the car is fitted with factory Cruise control the unit is bolted to where you would bolt the end of the bonnet strut. i may be wrong as I'm only looking at where the strut is mounted on the pics in this group of posts.

I got factory cruise...is the unit mounted differently with the petrol engine?

Fitted them today (a 10 and a 12 ring spanner required). I find they are just a tad short on lifting strength, probably due to the relatively weak leverage points. They don't seem able to lift the bonnet by themselves from any position but certainly do hold it firmly above the drop position which is also quite high. They don't interfere with the original prop which remains in place so if they lose gas and start to play up no drama to just remove them and call it quits.

However they do work and certainly appear to be very well made although one of the ball joints is a little loose and makes a clicking noise but it cannot pop out and is just a minor nit as is the bracket flexing a little.

I'm happy with them and for the money they are a steal.

Mine lift fairly fast from about the halfway point up until around 12" from full height where they then slowly creep to the fully open position.

I'm not sure if the Cruise is mounted differently on a petrol compared to a crdi,i have 2 petrol models. I've got nothing to compare the 2. its hard to tell in your pics sorry.

the pics were spot on mate.   on a petrol i30 the cruise is where your overflow bottle is.our overflow bottle is next to the washer bottle. the bonnet struts will fit easy on the petrol i30,i originally thought the cruise would be in the way.
