Well, I did a return jouney on the fabled M25 motorway around the north of London, England yesterday. Normally it's like a car park, but yesterday the traffic was free-flowing in both directions!  :o

So I used the cruise control in earnest for a few miles on both journeys. My overall impression is that it does what it says on the buttons, but when I compare it with the CC on my 350z it is slightly lacking in one department - and that is the 'Speed of Response' department, particularly when asking it to slow down by two or three MPH.

When I tap the CC button in my Zed she responds to my command instantly, either by accelerating or decelerating just as I tell her. However, in the i30 yesterday, when I tapped the down arrow (to decelerate) she seemed to need to think about it for a few seconds before she decided to do as she was told. This is not a desirable characteristic, because generally if I tap to decelerate it's because I'm heading towards the arse of the car in front and I would like an immediate response from the CC.

This problem wasn't so obvious when I told the car to ACCELERATE slightly using cruise control, probably because the 'accelerate' command generally wasn't something I needed an urgent response to and because I'm not expecting a little 2.0L diesel engine to be able to respond like a 3.5L petrol one.

Does anyone else have views on the cruise control? Mine is the factory-fitted variety.

Hi
How much you pay? And how difficult was to install?

It was already fitted to the car when I bought it - I got the UK i30 Sport, which was part of our 'premium' model range in the UK - and all UK 'premium' models have CC fitted as standard, at the factory, by Hyundai.  Sorry I don't know a price for fitting CC - maybe someone else can help here? Or maybe you could phone your dealer for a price?

130manUK, i don't have the factory CC but an aftermarket one, it works fine, but i'm now used to it, you might find after you use yours more you will get the hang of it. i have a 5.4 v8 That has CC i can notice using that same as your talking about with your 350Z 9 slows more noticibly when i hit the coast comand, and excellerates more noticible when i hit the speed up comand. but the i30 is fine by me. i used the CC for about 5hours friday night then another 5 hours sunday worked fine holds the speed well up hills around corners and down hills, just does not operate brake to keep speed same downhill so can go a few k's over speed i set downhill. i'm sure most will be very happy with there factory fitted CC here.

Sorry Shambles, I meant all 2.0L diesels with Premium spec have CC.

Quite right John, I should have mentioned how well the CC keeps a regular speed on inclines - it does - and yes I too am happy with its overall performance. I wonder if the deceleration response can be made sharper.

I'm sure that CC is far more useful in Oz than in the UK - you have vast expanses of open road, while we have traffic jams!

i30manUK,

I suggest users of a cc read the manual in relation to the use of the cc in heavy or close traffic.  Look for information that refers specifically to the warnings about not using it in traffic situations that may require braking or where traffic is heavy.  Cc is not designed as a replacement for defensive driving in these situations. When you described the situation you wanted to reduce speed in, I crinched and though, "How dangerous is that - it's an accident waiting to happen."

Please don't be offended by my comments.  I am just letting everyone know what went through my mind.  Hyundai (or any manufacturer) could not be held responsible for the use of a cc that caused an accident in such a situation.

Further to what Bob has said for others who have not had a lot of experience with Cruise Control.. it should not be used in wet conditions... as in some cases if there is a loss of traction it can result in loss of control.

Thanks for your concern Bob, but don't worry about me- I'd have used the brakes if necessary! Problem with England is that it's almost imposible to find a 'traffic-free situation' to use the CC, so you use it when and where it's safe, albeit often with other cars in sight. When I used the phrase, "heading towards the arse of the car in front" I was using poetic license - at no time was I endangered by using the CC. To be honest I prefer driving without it!

This is my take, the CC is great on long trips, specialy if it is long weekends as here in NSW we have double demerit points on long weekends. so if you set your speed you can watch the road in front not have to keep watching your speedo, as when you look at your speedo you have your eye off the road.
in the i30 i have not had any risky moments at all useing CC, but with the V8 you need to know how to use it as if you have it set at say 110K's and it drops a few k's it will speed up very rapid, were the i30 does not do that it's just gental in its speed up just like i30manUK described. if i want to go somewhere thats very twisty with not much room to overtake and i'm in a hurry i would use the V8. but if i want to go cheaply i'll use the i30 CRDi. if you know what i mean.
cheers
