So tonight i decided i wanted to get on the roads with no one else on them. Im a confident night driver and so decided to go for a night time journey. I went to my local station grabbed some juice and off me and the girlfriend went, Didnt go anywhere in particular just drove around. Some city roads, a motorway and a few county roads.

All in all 78 Miles.

I loved it. Felt really comfortable and im feeling more in touch with the car, i can safely say i have a new found confidence in the car although im still very wary of everyone else im no where near as nervous and i see this as only being a good thing.

One thing i noticed was a distinct lack of power occasionally and terrible MPG. The entire trip i apparently averaged 16mpg..... The auto box seemed to take forever to drop down a gear when i was trying to pull onto a round a bout from about 10 MPH. Luckily there was no one around i just wanted to see how the car reacted in certain situations. I must be doing something wrong.

oh thats fantastic martin! great to see you getting used to car so quickly  :D

i do recall my dealer telling me to not push the car first 100ks or so, and i think i read this elsewhere to. not sure if thats a legitimate exercise to settle the car in or not.
the MPG is supposed to improve over time as it settles in. (no idea what 16mpg relates to here in aus) i still don't get what i'd like myself though at almost 20000k.

in some slow speed areas my gear box also doesn't seem to understand to drop down, so i do it manually. but it has got kick at higher speeds. i have the 2.0L auto petrol

Within the first 1000 km my i30 definitely felt underpowered.  Also, the mileage seemed rather low. It improved after 1000km.

My i30 is currently at around 1700 km. At the last (fourth) fill-up, the mileage was at 28MPG

Great news on the driving Martin.
Keep us posted and update us on the fuel economy. That's pretty low but after 4 or 5 tankfulls youget a better idea of where it's at.

Good to hear you are getting there Martin.

All you folks with woeful mpg, remember to reset the meter when you fill up or you are simply recording the value over the entire life of the car! :goodjob:

Yes.

By scrolloing thro' by pressing and letting go the reset you get the other read outs.

When the desired one is displayed press for longer and it resets.

Hi Martin.

Glad your getting out there, even if it is on those night time bombing raids :-)...   I often get crazy MPG read outs as well, like the guys here say, reset the MPG thingy and you'll get a more accurate reading.   I often press mine and old it for a reset just after I have joined the motorway it then takes a while to settle, it usually starts by telling my I am getting 50 or 60 MPG's.  Doesn't fool me though, I try to hold my rev counter steady, get behind one of the big boys  (in the near side lane) doing a steady sixty'ish and after a while it usually settles to somewhere above 40 MPG.  This gladdens my heart.  City centre and side roads and it drops off dramatically.
You'll soon get the hang of it all, just enjoy the learning curve.   Most of the guys in here are very knowledgeable and willing to help out, and it's more or less a flame proof zone, which is always a bonus for us guys who need the Dummies Guide, no offence meant, I did mean me.

good luck
asathorny
