I just had a phone call from Hyundai to tell me that my car is coming up for it's first service, this is what ya call being ahead of the game as I am at least eight weeks away from same.  Better to be on the ball I guess.  After we arranged a date the real reason for the call became apparent.  Do I want the AC serviced £30...   Now i recall being advised by one of our members that sometimes these AC bombs can be bought quite cheaply in *SALES* at certain outlets....  This guy did a bit of shroud waving, like, it can make you ill if we don't disinfect the filter for you and, your fuel consumption will drop through the floor if we don't do it...................

I said *NO* I can do that myself...

Then he advises me that I can also have a *FULL FLUSH AND FUEL TREATMENT* to improve my performance.  Just for another £30....

Again I said *NO*, if my car needs a duel additive I can buy it myself and pour it in with my next fill up.

Well, I just thought I'd better check in with you guys, I am correct aren't I.  This is just a money maker isn't it, like the one when ya buy the car and they say that for £xxxx they can make your car be shiny forever, and we say, 'No thanks I can wax it myself'

Have I done the right thing chaps :-)

All money making.

Hyundai specifically recommend that engine flushes aren't done.

Aircon might want a top up in a few years if it fails to be cool enough. I don't think dealers usually offer to disinfect, but you are right you can get the cannisters from alsi/lidl twice a year or so for £1, and then are rarely needed (IE use one when it smells)

Millers fuel treatment on ebay for a tenner for enough for 4 or 5 tankfulls.

etc etc

And do shop around for service prices, if only to use the lowest quote to beat our local dealership around the head with. Also ask them how much cheaper it is if you supply your own oil.

Just re-read and noticed you booked it in already - 8 weeks ahead, arey they desperate? I hope you asked how much they were charging for the service before booking it in!!!! Shop round now, you can always cancel. You can haggle, these prices are not dictated by anyone.

Fully agree with both of you.. I guess you barely use Air Con over there "Asa" but probably worth running it for at leat 10 minutes every few weeks to keep it working in tip top condition but I've never had to have Aircon serviced on a modern car even when I have kept them for 4 years ...

I hardly ever turn the aircon off. Best way to keep the car dry. It makes little difference on my fuel figures on the diesel. It's particularly useful for keeping ice off the inside of the car this time of year (with the heat on of course)

Excellent... thanks to both of you, I just needed reassurance I was doing the right thing.   This is what I love about this club, good advice and council, humour, techi support....

Thanks again
Asa

PS I have been using my AC quite a bit actually, we did have some pretty warm weather till a couple of months ago, not like OZ warm, but pretty warm for us in these northerly latitudes I also am using now in this freezing weather since number one daughter assures me the heater gets hotter with it on, is this true?

It doesn't get any hotter per se, but it does make defrosting quicker becuase it makes the air drier. Avoids misting on the inside of the windscreen, that will freeze when you park up in sub zeros.

Aircon won't go stale in the winter months when you have the heat on with it. It goes stale in summer when you have it on cold and then switch it off with moisture in it, and the the bacteria multiply. If you run it with temperature on hot once in a while during the summer to dry it, it will keep smell free.

Now my dealer hasn't asked me to have these done in 3 years.

May be he knows I'm a t*ight a*se so doesn't want the aggro.

I'd tell then No Thank you as I'd expect the air con to be OK for at least 5 years.

Re fuel thingy - Again I'd say no as with the diesel the fuel you buy should have something similar in to keep the system clean.
  • 1.4 Petrol Active I'm no expert, so please correct me if

Yeppers eye30...

Lorian and Dazz, set me straight, but it's nice to have further approbation, I wasn't aggressive with the guy ( I guess everyone has to make a living some how), but I was quite firm in my *NO* and I am glad to have it confirmed that I ain't being silly by not having it done.

I'm a spender but I can be because I watch my pennies.. (The original tight ar$e)

Every Dollar or Pound you don't spend on unnecessary maintenance etc.. is a lot more than that when you take into account what you have to earn before tax comes out to end up with each Dollar or Pound  :D
