Hi guys,

We took delivery of our i30! Overall we are really pleased.

Getting into the car, it had 15kms on the clock. Started her up and were a bit concerned after giving the engine a bit of a rev and the engine sounded rough. This is our first diesel, and because of the information in this form I was able to explain to the Mrs this was pretty normal for a new diesel motor. Checked the fluids, paintwork etc and away we went to Caltex to fill 'er up.

Since then we've been fighting over who gets to drive!

The kumho tyres are at 42 psi at the moment, tomorrow night i'll drop them to 36psi before we drive up to Port Macquarie .

Cheers

It will sound a bit diesel-ish until the engine temperature rises (5 mins driving). but do remember not to turn the engine over until he glow plug (amber coil symbol) goes out on the dash, it just takes a second ot two to warm up with the ignition on.

Lorian, I'm so used to jumping in and starting her up, I've actually resorted to putting a sign up in the garage 'Glow Plugs' to remind me.

My fuel consumption is on 8.0l per 100kms, I dont think that will improve while i'm running her in! (owners manual states to keep revs between 2000 & 4000 rpm as much as possible, plus most of the kms will be city driving.

Hi Luke.. I live in temperate Tasmania and very seldom  bothered (remembered) to warm up my glow plugs in the 2 and a half years (68,000kms) I had my CRDi .. not saying Lorian isn't correct in his recommendation though...

I think the 2000 to 4000 RPM reference relates to the petrol engine. 1800 to 3000RPM is a better range for the diesel (IMO) and this should help your economy ...

and..sounds like you need to reset the LPH reading

Nice and clean as you said!

36psi? Isn't it a bit harsh to ride? (The plate on the door pillar indicates 32psi for normal conditions)

Thanks Dazz, I feel like a newb for not knowing thats how the trip computer works.

Babis,  approx 36psi is the good comfort-performance sweet spot for these kumho tyres do far. Though in the inner-west of Sydney (dont know about Athens) 32psi does make sense for a more comfortable ride!

Thanks for the complimentary comments all, we are really happy with how the black paint goes with the rims!

On another note, when I took the wheels off on Sunday to put the mud guards on, i was shocked to notice (a small amount) of surface corrosion in some spots on the calipers and discs. I know thats been covered in this forum already, and  applying some protective sealant seems a good idea.

the disks will rust... they are cast iron, heat + cast iron = happy fun times for rust!

it should only rust around the edge really...

you CAN pull them off now and paint them if you want, it will slow it down!

To make herself remember now, she says she thinks of 'glow-worms' when getting in the car.

So now when we get in the car is 'gotta let the glow worms warm up'  :D

An update on our first weekend in with the i30.

On the way to Port Macquarie, hit the F3 and engaged 5th gear and cruise control, and was surprised we didnt have to drop down to 4th at any stage, it didnt seem to struggle at all on any hills.

Cruise control was great, particularly getting to the base of a steep hill, I would feel a nice boost as the the car kept the speed up. 4 hours flew by..

glow plugs can be a funny topic to talk about, some belive in them every time, others dont...

most cars they are "on" for the first 1 or 2 minutes of operation anyway!

We also drove up to 'North Brother' a mountain near Laurieton NSW, only about 400m above sea level, but its a really steep uphill drive for about 15 minutes, and the i30 loved it! Didn't have to push it very hard to keep up with a 90's model WRX in front, though I don't think we was trying!

Anyway when we got to the top to check out the view, I switched the car off straight away.

Agent (or anyone else that knows and reads this), should I have let the car running to let the turbo cool down afterwards? (The guy in the Rex didn't seem to bothered about doing this)

I was told the turbo really only needs to 'cool down' if you really thrash it, driving sensibly it is doubtful you would need to worry too much..

Disclaimer: Of course don't take my work for it and blaim me if something happens to your turbo

I do wait for the glow plugs to heat up, when I remember, its only been a week for me..

^^ Though I guess driving to work most of the time I am rolling slowly through the car park/security gates before I stop anyway, getting home isn't much different..

That all said, I'm sure it would be safer to get in the habit of letting it cool down first, maybe just grabbing my stuff and getting out of the car before I turn the engine off and take the keys would be a good habit to form..

its up to you... i personally dont really do much with the glow plugs... i just start it, it starts like a petrol i.e straight away...

with the turbo, i religeously let it cool down for 30 seconds, if ive been driving it hard then a bit longer... but i have a turbo timer for that!

from my old skyline, 30 seconds ~ 1min of 5000rpm ~ 7500rpm would get the manifold, turbo and exhaust glowing to the cat converter... i know how little it takes to get things "hot as hell" so i always let it cool down! i mean it PROBABLY doesnt need it, as its not working like my old car, but i would rather be safe than putting a new turbo on it later on for the sake of a few seconds now!

Is 36psi the indended pressure indicated on sticker or the manual?
Mine indicates 32 psi under normal conditions and 36psi when full loaded.

Hi Babis, I read the inside door panel and the side of the tyre which provide conflicting information on the max psi. I read this;

https://www.i30ownersclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,31.msg16827.html#msg16827

It seems to make sense, at 44psi, if I left it at that pressure, with loading pressure on a 38 degree day I might be up for a new tyre or two !

Agent I like the idea of having a turbo timer, I probably don't cane it enough to warrant it though I will still add it to the list to be safe. On the list after a new pair of JL split speakers for the front, is a sound deadening kit for the front doors. Cheers.

it has its downsides!

when its running, you cant lock the car... so if your like me... your locking it from 50M away while your walking! the lights stay on park, and finally the doors dont unlock when you pull the key out!
