Hi All,

We recently bought a White CR Di, that will spend most of it's life not under cover. Has any one used the newer "Paint Protection" finishes?
I had a new car (Torago) Ming finished & it only needed one cut and polish in the 18 years we had it.

Cheers Neil

A self applied product called jetseal comes highly recommended by member rocket who has a body repair shop but otherwise the general consensus on here is they are a waste of money on modern paint finishes (unless you are going to keep this one 18 years )

If you go that way deal direct with the company concerned after googling them for pros ad cons (don't go thru the dealer who will load the cost by 50% or more...)

Feel free to use the search function to find plenty of discussion on the topic... :goodjob2:

G'day mate,

Personally think it is a waste of coin, I had a 1997 EL Falcon which I sold last year. Didn't do anything too much to it, only gave it a glaze type polish when it needed a spruce up, and the paint looked as good as when I got it, taking into account the various nicks associated with life of course.

The Wife's 2003 BA Falcon is the same, 8 years young polished it the other day and it looks good as new (same disclaimer as above). So a bit of clear coat polish every 12 months or so should keep you looking good at $40 a bottle, it's much cheaper than paint protection, and you don't have to worry oif you want to use some tar off or the like.

Was reading with interest about this topic mainly because of some people stating that the paint thickness on Hyundai cars was pretty thin.

I have been keeping an eye on older cars to see if their clear coats have failed, I have spotted quite a few excels and other hyundais whose paint looks faded and where the clear coat has completely peeled off but they must be 15 years or more.

Nevertheless my reading brought me to a few products mentioned including Opti-Coat 2.0 and Cquartz. Yes they do seem pretty hard core, and I wonder how much benefit they give.

Came across this forum:
http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/product-reviews/34883-review-extreme-testing-opti-coat-2-0-cquartz.html

What do others think.

My past car which I have just sold at 8.5 years was doing well with a yearly or so polish with Nu-Finish, water beading well on it. I was lazy and mostly polished just the horizontal surfaces. Don't know whether to just stick to that for the new i30.

Looks like an interesting link Con but reckon if I try anything It would be jetseal .. quite cheap and effective according to Rocket and from what he showed us gave a very nice shine .. Either search Jetseal on here or find Rocket in the Member list and look at his posts and pix...

He hasn't been on for a while .. think I know why but will leave it at that ..

You will find that applying the opti-seal, cquartz, you will need an experience person to put it on and also your paintwork needs to be detailed before application, as all swirls, marks , blemishes etc will be accentuated. The opti seal is about $800 to have applied and once applied you only need to wash the car after that. A lot of this information can be found on the detailers forum

If you want to spend that sorta money, give it to me, I'll fly over from the UK and wax her for ya.....  I can stay in Dazz's garage for economy, I am sure we can come to an arrangement, like, I wax his as well....

When I bought my car I was accosted by theese rogues trying to get there hand into my wallet....  I phoned my cousin Ed, he's been in the body shop business all his working life mainly has a painter, but towards his retirment as a body shop manager, I asked him the sort of question we all ask about these products.

His advice was unequivocal although I am unable to quote him word for word here due to some of our members being of a more sensative nature, but what he meant was 'it's a money making racket, so if you have more money than sense and want to throw some of it away, go for it.  Otherwise, get a good quality wax, wash yer car and wax it up all over.    I followed my cousins advice to the letter....

I hope your talking about his I30.....

$800 buys you a lot of polish.....especially when you consider it lasts nearly a year before you need to do it again, and the spiffy beading is nice to see.

It appears the Opti-Coat 2 paint sealant I mentioned here is available in Australia for about $100. Meant to last a lifetime but my main worry is applying it properly.

I'd love to give it a try as my car is new. But it does warn about stuffing things up if not applied properly.

I'm sure if you took your time it would be fine (just follow the instructions to the letter..) unless the product is from Asia... :whistler:
